Record Smashed at QuadZilla 2010 Ultra-Cycling Event
DeLong and Olsen team up to set a new overall record under 30 hours
The 10th QuadZilla since 1995 was held on August 14 – 15, 2010
starting in Ithaca, NY. The QuadZilla is a 400 mile circumnavigation
of all 11 of the shimmering, crystal-clear Finger Lakes of Upstate New
York. The riders are challenged with steep climbs and wild descents.
The total ascent for the route is approximately 28,000 feet or about
70 feet of ascent per mile. Riders must make a series of checkpoints
(including secret controls) in specified times and finish in 40 hours.
Twenty-three riders from 8 states and 2 Canadian provinces
participated.
Dennis DeLong, age 54 from Greece, NY (RAAM 90-93), and Henrik Olsen,
age 44 from Walkersville, MD, teamed up from the first climb and
stayed together to the finish in Ithaca, NY to set a new overall
record of 29 hours and 54 minutes for the 400 mile distance. The old
record of 30:45 was set in 2007 by Dennis and three other men. Dennis
and Henrik shared one support vehicle and also used the standard
checkpoints as needed. Both men came to QuadZilla to set a record and
they are the first to go under 30 hours for the distance.
Congratulations on a hard won effort especially considering the strong
headwind on the outbound section and the rainfall during the final
Auburn to Ithaca section of the ride.
Honorable mention goes to Marcel Marion of Saint Michel, Quebec Canada
with a spectacular ride of 34:33. Marcel relied on the staffed
checkpoints for his nutrition and he is a tenacious rider of great
physical and mental ability. Renato Alessandrini of Coutice, Ontario
Canada came in at the bell at 40:00, breathing hard but extremely
happy. Thanks also to Leslie Holton for flying in from Pine, Colorado
to give QuadZilla a shot. Slowed by the 20+mph headwinds, Leslie and
QuadZilla women’s record holder Michelle Dulieu wisely chose to
complete the Finger Lakes 350 mile route, a very challenging ride for
any ultra cyclist.
Even with extra food and water stops, QuadZilla saw a large number of
DNF’s this year — 9 of 23 riders. The strong headwinds and afternoon
heat took a toll on many and the steady rain on day two also led to
some packing.
Special thanks to our only sponsor Hammer Nutrition,
www.hammernutrition.com
They gave overwhelming support to QuadZilla and the riders were very
appreciative of this. Hammer Nutrition is our only sponsor because
they are the products I trust my riders to use during long endurance
events. Hammer has a long history of sponsoring various ultra events,
big and small, from cycling to running and triathlons. Thank you
Hammer Nutrition for your long standing commitment to ultra athletes.

Although no plans are finalized, we are looking at possibly running a
QuadZilla Staged and a QuadZilla Stripped! in the future. QuadZilla
Staged would be 4 days of 100/125 miles per day with a bag sag to
motels. QuadZilla Stripped! would be very tough—the normal catered
support at controls would be cut to relying on stores for controls and
one bag sag to a sleep stop checkpoint.
Thanks to all the QuadZilla alumni who have tested their mettle
against the brutal climbs of our Finger Lakes region over the past 15
years. It’s been a true pleasure for myself and countless crew support
to help you persevere on an epic ultra-cycling adventure!
