to QuadStick

Hello everyone,

I’m an Assistive Technology Specialist contracted by the DC Rehabilitation Services Administration, currently working with a man who is quadriplegic and uses a non-Bluetooth QuadStick with an Xbox via a Wingman XB3 (connected to the QuadStick’s USB-B port). The Xbox output goes to his Roku TV.

He also has:

  • a Dell Latitude 9520 (Windows 11) with the QMP software, and

  • an iPhone 13.

In addition to gaming, our goal is to enable him to have full computer access on his Dell laptop for Microsoft Office and web use.

I’m collaborating with a colleague from AbleGamers who is very experienced with QMP, but I don’t personally have a QuadStick on hand to experiment with. I will also be training the user on Dragon NaturallySpeaking 16.1 with a gooseneck noise-canceling microphone. I’ve trained Dragon users for many years and am comfortable creating voice macros, so if QMP navigation can be driven by keystrokes, I can automate workflows with Dragon.

I’m hoping to learn from anyone with direct, hands-on experience with the following:

  1. Switching Xbox games via voice:
Has anyone successfully used Dragon (or another voice engine) to issue voice commands that navigate QMP to switch between Xbox games or profiles?

  2. Switching QuadStick between Xbox and PC by voice or switch:
Is there a recommended way to let a user switch the QuadStick between controlling the Xbox (via Wingman XB3) and controlling a Windows PC—ideally by voice command (e.g., Dragon macro) or by activating a switch?
Related: have you implemented a workflow where, when switching between Xbox and PC, the TV input (Roku) also switches to the correct source automatically?

  3. QuadStick with iPhone:
Has anyone implemented a supported or practical method for using the QuadStick to act as a mouse/keyboard on an iPhone (e.g., via a bridge device), and then switching the QuadStick to the iPhone by voice or switch?

  4. Bluetooth upgrade worth it?
In your experience, is it worth upgrading a non-Bluetooth QuadStick to a Bluetooth model to enable more seamless switching between Xbox, Windows laptop, and (if feasible) iPhone?
If so, what does a smooth, real-world switching workflow look like?

Any guidance, lessons learned, or pointers to example setups would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to design a setup that minimizes caregiver intervention and allows the user to move independently between gaming and productivity tasks.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can share.

Best regards,
Harris
