Is it safe to delete columns D - J?

No.  Columns K and after can used for anything, like comments.

The reason is there are actually eight input columns for use with pattern recognition.  If any text is put in those columns, the quadstick may try to interpret it as a pattern.

You can hide columns D through J so you don't need to look at them when they are blank.   That's really common.
