Hello All,

Any input would be appreciated.  My QTOF was installed in July 2007.  I have noticed that my collision gas (nitrogen) tank is still at ~2400 PSI which is about the pressure expected in a brand new tank.  I have been using my instrument almost exclusively in MS mode.  It is only recently that I have been using MS-MS mode and I have been having trouble getting nice consistent MS-MS spectra.  I was told that I should have used up the collision gas nitrogen a long time ago because it is used in both MS and MS-MS modes.  Can any of you tell me what your collision gas usage has been?

Best regards,

Dan

I believe I change the colision gas once in 6 months but I do a lot of MS/MS.

Thanks Roy

Do you use a full size lab gas cylinder for the nitrogen collision gas?

Dan

Yes Dan. Its from Airgas. I have just checked the cylinder this morning and its now 2000 psi after 6 months or so. I would monitor the outer gage, I think you don't want to go less than 15 psi, right?

Best,
Roy

The QToF uses about 1 ml/min of collision gas, if there is not a
leak. Typically the large cylinders (~5 ft tall) will last more than
a year. It should remain on during MS or MS/MS operation and the such
the scan type should not impact usage.
