Translating Qtilities

Howdy,

I want to start translating Qtilities because it has many strings appears in English where I want to use it for other languages. From where I've to start?

Cool! That would be great. All relevant strings in Qtilities are inside tr()s (trace and debug messages are not inside tr()s to make translation easier). Thus, all that is needed is to perform the translation process. I've started that before for a different project, and its pretty easy.

The first step is to follow the guidelines here: http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-4.8/linguist-programmers.html.  It will basically extract all these tr()s for you into a .ts translation file. The name of the file needs to end with the correct translator code (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh456380.aspx). 

Then you can open that file in Qt Linguist and you can start to edit the strings. See http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-4.8/linguist-translators.html

For Qtilities, I suggest that we put all the .ts files under a /translations directory (I don't think they need to be in the same directory as the .pro file, but I might be wrong).

I am relocating and will be travelling for the next 2 to 3 weeks without internet access (I think) so I will not be able to assist with this right now. However if you start the process and commit to your fork I will merge and continue the process from there on.

Actually I know exactly the needed steps but I noticed that there are many strings not ready for translation process for that I asked you about the start point. All what I'm asking for is preparing these strings to be able to translate because I'm still learning how to use Qtilities and I need very much help to do that :-!  , but I though why I've to wast the time, I can translate it during learning process (although I prefer to contribute in open source projects but the commercial ones).

Good. As I said I tried to tr() everything that is relevant (thus, not trace or debug messages). If I missed some, then I would be happy to add them if you let me know where I missed. Otherwise if you can add the missing tr()s I would appreciate it.

I understand your preference to contribute to open source projects instead of commercial ones. Qtilities was only available under GPL before v1.4. I've added LGPL in v1.4, thus you can use it in your commercial project without having to pay me a cent, thus you benefit from countless hours I spent developing Qtilities. Also, the commercial license is available under an "any donation fee structure" for small companies (less than 5 people), thus you can pay 1$ and you can benefit from Qtilities. That's good enough reason for me to consider it as a good open source candidate to contribute to, but that's just my opinion.

That said, if you want to contribute I would off course appreciate it.

I successfully created qtilities.ts and I'll start working on it today.

Lucky me! who will help me out to understand what's goinig in with Qtilities?! I found this mailing list sleepy!

Any way, thanks for great project I'll try to understand how to use it although I still suffer from the complications of Qtilities logic (I learned Qt within 3 days since 7 years ago)
