SWAT+ Calibration Guidance

Hello everyone,

I have successfully run a SWAT+ model using two years of weather data and would now like to learn the calibration process.

I have a few questions:

  1. How and where can I find or download the simulated output files that are required for calibration?
  2. Is calibration for SWAT+ typically performed using SWATplus-CUP?
  3. I understand that SWATplus-CUP requires a license. Since I do not currently have access to a license, are there any free alternatives available for learning and performing calibration?

I would appreciate any guidance, tutorials, or recommendations for beginners learning SWAT+ calibration.

There are several open source packages.
You can check for example:

SWATrunR,  
R-SWAT,
pySWATPlus



Some packages offers descriptive examples which are very useful,

Hi,
To answer your questions:
1. This knowledge is available only to you as the model creator. You should be familiar with your specific modeled area, its unique characteristics, and where or what physical observations can be obtained for it.
2. No, we do not recommend or support proprietary tools. We recommend using only open-source tools for your workflows, such as swatrunR, pySWATPlus, or the SWAT+ Toolbox.
3. SWAT+ is and always will be open-source, and we exclusively promote open-source tools. Everything mentioned above is completely free to use.

For calibration, I highly recommend starting with this paper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364815223002645 .You can use the SWATdoctR tool to help with this process: https://biopsichas.github.io/SWATdoctR/
This guidance will help you understand the basics of your model setup, what to look for to achieve a successful calibration, and where to start. Please do not make the common mistake of diving straight into hard calibration without a proper understanding of your model and system first.
