Hi All -

My goal is to identify which hrus meet criteria for tile drainage (<5% slope, hydrologic soil group C & D, and land use HAY and AGRR). I have a raster file that highlights area where those criteria are met and I would like to match it with the respective HRUs to identify where there is overlap. I am curious which hru shape file I should use. I have identified three shape files in the SWAT+ output: hru.shp (located in Scenarios > Default > Results) and hru1.shp, and hru2.shp (located in Watershed > Shapes).
  • I am understanding that these shape files are generated before thresholds, but is it fair to say that if I opt for HAY and AGRR to not be considered for the thresholds the HRU ID should stay the same.
  • For some of the polygons in the hru1.shp file the HRUS column has NA, how should this be addressed
  • For the hrus and hrus2 file, the coverage is not comprehensive? Is there an explanation for this?
Thank you so much,

Liliana

You cannot rely on the shapefiles to accurately describe HRUs unless you
do not filter the HRUs at all.

hru1.shp shows the original HRUs before any filters are applied. NA
indicates those filtered out.

hru2.shp has the filtered ones removed (and hru.shp in the results
folder is a copy of it).

In the model, hrus not filtered out are expanded to make up the area of
each LSU. This cannot be done in the shapefiles, and in any case an HRU
is really an abstraction of the part of the LSU consisting of the HRU's
landuse, soil and slope. It has no more defined location than its LSU.

If you want to discover which HRUs meet your criteria then you need to
use the project database. Time to brush up your SQL!
