I was having this issue, and the cause was that I have 2-Factor Authn on my
google account. I guess the solution is accounting for that case or
altering the text of the error message to reflect that as a possible cause.

I had the same problem, needed to generate an application specific password
because of 2 step verification being enabled on my account.
