The new "search box" represents an amazing degradation in usability
over the old search box. How do I get a web page that summarizes my
search results? How do I see more than a few at a time? How do I
filter them down to the categories I want (e.g., if I want only
email)? How do I display a result?

Sure, If I screw around with it for 5 or 10 minutes, I could probably
figure this stuff out -- then have to figure it out again the next
time I need to search for something, and again, and again, until my
annoyance factor for this app is pegged at 11.

You can start with the code you can download here: http://code.google.com/p/qsb-mac/source/browse/ and modify it to make the application work however you like.

Alternately, you could also uninstall QSB and install one of the many other fine application launchers.
