Now, none of my Applications items are shown when I enter search
terms.

Anyone know why?

press cmd-space, type something, like "a", then at the bottom of results go to preferences.  Then go to privacy, click the +, then add Application folder to it.  Close preferences, wait around 30 seconds. Then go back and remove the Application from the privacy.

Applications was selected the index was corrupt. I downloaded The
Alfred search application. It used the correct switches fr mdutil to
recreate the index.

/Applications/Alfred.app/Contents/Resources/reindex.sh ; exit;
localhost:~ jwithrington$ /Applications/Alfred.app/Contents/Resources/
reindex.sh ; exit;

***************************************************
* *
* This script will reindex your metadata by *
* running the command 'sudo mdutil -E -i on /' *
* *
* Indexing can take up to an hour *
* and Alfred won't work during this time. *
* *
* You can see the progress of the reindexing *
* by clicking on the spotlight magnifying *
* glass in the top right of the menu bar. *
