Does a step group remove the need for a sponsor? Why or why not?

While I have enjoyed and benefited from step groups, they do not take the place of a sponsor.

When I choose a sponsor, I am looking specifically for someone to guide me through the steps while knowing me for exactly who I am. I need continuity and consistency.

In a step group, I get multiple takes in approaching the steps, and I receive lots of helpful insight. However, I may not be comfortable sharing EVERYTHING in a step group. There is also the potential for "answer shopping" and looking for co-signing of self-will.

Have a great day!

No.  I prefer working in a step group (especially with my sponsor).   I always get a number of different perspectives on steps and the questions concerning those steps.  I’ve been in several groups with men with widely differing backgrounds and several of those men were going through things that I had experienced or was experiencing at the time, and I have helped and been helped by those other men.  But I need a guide to help me through the steps or I need to be a guide to help others through the steps.  I know what I get when I try to sponsor myself, whether I am working in a step group or not, and it ain’t pretty.

Love,

Jon P.

NO. It's a great motivator to work the steps in a controlled environment on a set schedule but I have never felt the bond or the trust with a group of men that I feel in a one on one sponsor / sponsee situation. I've also been very cautious as to who gets to know some of those deep dark secrets that I swore I'd never tell anyone and today there are a few who have heard them but not in a workshop environment.

I really don't know what a step group is/does, so cannot answer this...
