Did you find an organised religion useful to supplement your spiritual journey? How do you fill gaps in your spiritual belief system?

I'm still in "pray to what ever is out there" mode, the gap is filled by faith that they are being received.
Have a good day,
Rick.

I am an atheist, so I find little use in religion, organized or otherwise, today. However, early in my clean time, I did a LOT of searching, and I participated in various types of religions and spiritual traditions. This was not at all a wast of time.

First and foremost, this experience helped me to come to terms with and accept the fact that I do not and cannot believe in a supernatural being who has providence over mankind and influences the day to day goings on of life on this planet or any other, if that is the case.

The other thing I have gained from my experience in experimenting with religious tradition is thorough examination of my values and convictions, and my beliefs about my place in existence. All of these experiences brought me to a place of acceptance with my beliefs and what power I do believe in and how that power applies to my program and finding a new way to live.

Any text (including religious), speaker, conversation, song, concert experience, walk in the mountains, death of a loved one, etc. which causes reflection on my convictions, values, morals, and my/our place in existence acts as a spiritual supplement for me. Since I look to no authority on spiritual matters, it is a very practical thing for me, and I must keep my eyes open for source and constantly evaluate.

Thanks for letting me share. Have a great weekend!
Matthew

I haven’t found it necessary to supplement my spiritual journey with anything other than the fellowship and twelve steps of NA.   I do know a number of fellow recovering addicts that have sought other paths on their spiritual journey that work for them so I would not knock what other people choose to supplement their recovery with.   As far as I can tell there aren’t any gaps in my spiritual belief system, but maybe I’m just in denial.

Love,

Jon P.

Organized religion is not really part of my recovery story today -not so much because I have a problem with it as I am not willing to make the additional commitment. I didn't come into NA with the negative baggage that many people carry into recovery. Some of my best childhood memories were growing up in the church. My current belief system is very personal and I don't feel compelled to encourage others to embrace it. I fill gaps in my spiritual belief system by spending quiet time in the woods. Also the last time I was formally work on the 11th Step, I learned a few techniques to provide focus to my prayers. I have found that the spiritual gaps are usually fueled by self pity and/or some level of greed.

I stopped going to church after my first divorce and even though I define my H.P. as God the Spiritual Entity worshipped in most of them I have developed my own method of spiritual devotion devoid of the religious commercialization espoused by most churches. I don't need a specific religion or edifice to define and create the relationship I have with mine.
