Who are these "predecessors' I hear about every now now and then? How have they helped  us in our recovery?

There were people at the first meeting I went to, and there were people at the first meeting they went to, and there were people at the first meeting they went to… on back to Jimmy K and the folks that came up with the first edition of the literature etc., etc. and even before that.   In that time there has been a lot of literature created and service committees, and groups, and areas, and regions, and world service, and conventions, and workshops, and lots of addicts have found a way to get clean and stay clean and have shared about their experience, all of which has helped us in our recovery.  I celebrated 15 years clean February 21st and I think I’m beginning to feel a bit like a predecessor myself.  = )

Love,

Jon P.

I do believe Jon P. nailed it once again :) Ditto !!

I will add that it has made me feel really proud when someone has refered to me in that context as well. I'm also happy to share that most of the guys that I considered to be that in our area are still around and sharing their ESH and their own Personal Growth still today.

I think the term Predecessors has become really overused in recent years, meaning anyone who has been clean and in recovery a long time. While this is a reasonable definition, I don't believe that is the meaning as expressed in out literature. When Carl P. drafted the introduction to our Traditions during the World Literature Conference in Memphis shortly before publication of the first edition Basic Text, my understanding is that he was referring to the founding members of our fellowship and even more so, the early members of Alcoholics Anonymous.

These people developed the steps and traditions that we have adapted to treat addiction in NA. Their impact on our recovery is immeasurable. I have been clean a long time and have been referred to as a "predecessor". While I have considerable experience, strength and hope to share, calling me a predecessor diminishes the impact if the word as it applies to our founding members.
