Hello,
You are receiving this email because you previously registered for a Hanlan's Point Beach-related consultation.
The City of Toronto invites you to apply to participate in the Hanlan's Point Beach Working Group and help shape the future of Hanlan's Point Beach!
The Hanlan’s Point Beach Working Group is being created to respond to community feedback collected through the Toronto Island Master Plan process. Its creation is a key recommendation of the draft Toronto Island Master Plan and it will ensure that community voices and needs are centres as implementation of the Toronto Island Master Plan unfolds.
The City is accepting applications to participate in the Working Group until Sunday, November 26th. Selected participants will be notified the following week and the first meeting will be held on December 13th from 6 - 9 pm at Metro Hall (55 John Street).
What you need to know
The Hanlan's Point Working Group will consist of approximately 20 participants, including regular beach users, beach advocates, and representatives of organizations related to the beach. The Working Group will include a diverse range of Hanlan's Beach users, with representatives from across the 2SLGBTQ+ spectrum, nudist and heterosexual communities who use the beach, people of different ages and abilities, and people who are a part of equity-deserving communities.
Participants of the Working Group will fall into two categories – invited members who are community leaders, advocates, or representatives of relevant organizations; and community members who will be selected at random through a civic lottery process. That’s where this application process comes in.
In a civic lottery, applicants are selected at random while controlling for specific demographic characteristics to ensure that the group reflects the diversity of the community it will represent. Demographic characteristics and other factors that will be reflected through the selection process include:
There will be 13 community members on the Working Group representing the beach community. Community members will participate for a two-year term, after which new participants will be selected to allow for more community members to be involved in the process.
How will the Hanlan’s Beach Working Group Work?
The City expects meetings of the Working Group to occur about every quarter. They will typically run from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Meetings will be held both virtually and in person.
Working Group members will also be required to commit some additional time outside of these meetings for things like reviewing materials, preparing for meetings, and reviewing email correspondence. Group members will be engaged in a collaborative process to develop a Terms of Reference to determine exactly how the Group will function, including meeting frequency.
The survey to apply can be accessed at: https://chkmkt.com/HanlansWorkingGroup. Please feel free to share this opportunity with your networks. The more people who apply, the more likely we will be to achieve the diversity we are looking for.
Thank you,
