Hi all! Long time lurker and finally decided to join. Hopefully I can help others while getting my questions answered!

I am wondering if I can do more things to my main outputs. Currently, I primarily use the built-in output. I have tried assigning the main outputs to two patches, in the hopes of having two different master level outputs (Think of it as one for main sounds, and then another one much lower for sound scary thi Think of it as one for main sounds, and then another one much lower for soundscaping, as just a way to rough a bunch of cues to where I need them).

That didn't really work, as they seem to mirror each other. However, it was towards the end of my design process and I had never played with area of the program before so I might've that didn't really work, as they seem to mirror each other. However, it was towards the end of my design process and I had never played with that area of the program before so I might've done it wrong. Any thoughts?

My other question involves inserting effects on an output and not just individual cues. Is there a way to do that? That would be helpful in a number of situations. I saw a show once when you is there a way to do that? That would be helpful in a number of situations. I saw a tour once where they asked for all of the audio channels in the house to be set to zero/flat, and then they EQed from Qlab. I don't know whether they would've gone through each cue individually - certainly it would be great to be able to make changes right there on the master out so you could adjust room to room, night night.

A few years ago I had looked at adding EQ and compression on the outputs of my laptop for a different project I was working on. Had to add them to the system and make some hacks to OS X. It wasn't the best solution, and I don't remember working very well. Plus I had to make sure I got rid of it - didn't want to live with that!

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Brian

All the things you describe require a Pro Audio License.

That's fine. I have the full bundle. I had to rebuild my machine during that earlier show, so maybe having multiple versions of the main output didn't work because maybe my license wasn't reactivated. But, assuming everything is working correctly now, where would I insert those effects on the main output?

If you’re trying to have two different master outputs by changing the level in the Device Routing tab of the Editing Patch window, I don’t think that’s going to work. It’s changing the level of the device itself, so the device output level will be the same across all patches.

If you select Device Outputs tab, you can add effects to the output of the device as you describe.

If you want to get a little more selective with the effects, but still being able to assign them to multiple cues efficiently, you can add effects in the Editing Patch window under Cue Outputs, but assign them to, say, 3-4. Then activate 3-4 under the Device Routing tab. This way anything patched to 3-4 will still be sent to your main 2 channels. So on each individual cue, if you want it dry, turn the cue up in 1-2, and if you want it run through the effect, turn the cue up in 3-4. Make sense?

You can't do this using different patches. There is only one device routing to set master levels per output device.

You would be better doing this with the device routing. So Cue outputs 1+2  are your full level outputs, and Cue outputs 3+4 are your Lower level outputs. They are then matrixed in device routing to the same outputs  like this.

The cue you wanted to send to the lower level outputs would be set up like this

Here is a screenshot od a compressor inserted on cue outputs 1+2
