there is currently no built in way for qlab to do this.

i might gently suggest that if you're trying things as complex as live video and audio recording as part of the show, you might want to consider having more than one operator...

Thanks so much for the response Sam - I normally would totally agree! This is a 5 second bit (literally 5 seconds when recorded and 5 seconds played back) that occurs once in the show, so a second operator for a "bit" just isn't needed. I'm just seeing if there's a cool unique solution before we go to the backup plan.

Thanks again,

Could be recorded and played back from a DAW (I use Reaper for this when I need to), the recording and playback of which could be triggered from qlab. That said, there are issues to think about (compression for instance), that I'd want to think through to function as some sort of quality control. Can all be handled in reaper (even with the operator just looking at qlab) if you're thoughtful about it.

Maybe triggering something found here via MIDI with QLab?

Good calls guys! Looking at easy to use, midi trigger-able samplers.

Right now, checking out HighLife. If anyone has one that they like, gimme a shout.

Thanks!

You could use something like the Roland AR-200R solid State player/recorder. Record with a button press, and playback via midi control.

A digital solution to Jens's suggestion:

If you want to build a simple barebones tool to do this it seems like  a simple task to program in Max|MSP. Look into the "Buffer" object. You could then trigger it with midipipe or something like that?

I've done this most succesfully using Ableton Live on the same computer as QLab, even using the same interface. It's even possible to grab audio in looping layers, letting the first chunk determine the length of the loop.

+1 for Live and QLab (with a good controller and add some MH card and MIO console and you'll never worry about routing again)

Hey Dan,

How would I setup REAPER to record and playback with midi? Can it be programmed to respond to midi or do I need third party software?

Thanks!

MaxMSP would definitely be the best way to do this. It is fairly simple to set up the buffer to record and playback a clip. You can trigger it using midi from QLab through the OSX IAC Midi Buses.

Hey Everyone,

Thank you all for your replies on this.

Mike - MaxMSP looks great and I am hoping to use it for a project down the road, but the cost is too high for what I need (this is for a 10 second bit in the show), and the show runs beyond the length of the demo.

I think I found an easy solution that I thought I'd share. Is it perfect? No, but it's pretty close and I was able to do it without spending a dime.

What I am trying to do: capture a 10 second sample live in a stage play that will then be played back later in the show. There is one operator for both sound and lights, so all cues need to be called in Qlab (no switching software midshow).

I found a looping program called "Mobius" (http://www.circularlabs.com) - a simple looping program that can be completely controlled by midi triggers. I set up my session, lined up the midi buses in OSX, setup some midi cues in Qlab and then captured the signals for each function in Mobius.

2 things I learned that might help someone down the road:
  • Mobius needs a "Note on" and "Note off" for it to do an open ended recording. So Qlab needs to separate midi cues (note on & note off) with an auto continue to have Mobius record. This "Double Cue" setup does not need to be done with pause and play.
  • Mobius doesn't have a "Stop", but it has a "Pause". I setup a Pause in Qlab and then when the "Play is triggered, it automatically starts the cue at the beginning.
If anyone has any additions or other thoughts, I'd love to hear them. My last obstacle is when I play this back, I want to run it with a high pass filter and Mobius doesn't have filters. We have a Motu Ultralite, but I gotta imagine there is a simple sampler that has this built in in one place (like audacity, but midi trigger-able).

Thanks for the comments and for keeping the thread alive!

FWIW PureData Pd is an open source alternative to MaxMSP.

In reaper, go into preferences and the keyboard shortcuts, and you can set custom shortcut for any of hundreds of different built-in commands, or create custom actions or custom sequences (for instance, record, wait ten seconds, stop recording, rewind to beginning of track, mute everything besides selected track ... That could all be a single sequence operated from a single midi command you can assign it to).
