I have a preshow video which has a audio track.  I cannot get the audio track to playback in Qlab. The video plays but no audio.  Straight Audio cues play fine.  Do I have to have a separate audio cue for the audio track and sync the two?  I'm sort of at my wits end.  I've been throught the manual, the tutorials but there's not much about audio for video.  What am I missing?

Hi Rick,

There are some video codecs that, for whatever reason, Quicktime can't decode (the audio part) on a background thread. As such, for these codecs QLab disables the audio an just plays the video.

MPEG is the main culprit for this. Try a different codec if possible and you should get audio back.

Hi Rick,

I suggest you code the videos to .mp4 format or .mov. You might find VideoMonkey converter extremely useful. Just set the target format to apple TV.

Works for me each and every time.

Best regards,

Per Chris' instruction, I did a "get info" on the files...they show as "Quicktime Movie"  I don't remember the exact specs from when they were rendered  (in Sony Vegas 8 Pro).
Is it possible that I need to render to a special set of specs?

They playback fine in Quicktime Player( audio and video).

open the video in QuickTime and get info, hopefully it will share the codec information.

I typically use dv NTSC presets when I see them .. what are your export settings from Sony Vegas ??

Ok Video gurus,  here is what Quicktime says about my video:

Format:  Sorenson Video 3 Decompressor. 320x240 Millions
QDesign Music 2, Stereo 32,000 hhz
                FPS:  29.83

Data Size:  63.7MB
Data Rate:  256.74 kbit/s
Current Size:  670x502 pixels

Could it be the 32Khz audio that is the problem? I'm going to recode using 44.1 audio and a 512 Data rate.   That the next template in the renderer.

Thanks.  I'll report back.

Hi rick,

I think it might be the sorenson decompressor. I remember reading somewhere that final cut pro doesn't support the older sorenson codec's
maybe it is because of this that the audio acts up.
try running it through handbrake or videomonkey (I don't know that last one but luka recommended it)
if you can get your video file to something more "apple-y" it should work.
otherwise, ecamm movie tools can separate the audio from the video, then you have to trigger it separately in Qlab, not ideal but it might work.

good luck

sander

Sorenson (video) and QDesign(audio) were standard back in QuickTime 3
days before Apple started moving away from proprietary codecs.

The most likely way to solve this problem is to re-export from Vegas as
something more modern, perhaps H.264 with AAC or even uncompressed
audio.

If you cannot do that then as has been said there are several utilities
which can crosscode the clip you have for example:

Thanks everyone for their input.  I will try some different codecs and report back.  I generally do all my video in Vegas...have used it for years..but am a relatively recent convert to MAC...3yrs.  Most of my theatre playback equipment is PC but I'm gradually shifting over to Mac.

Actually the show that this video is for has already opened and is running on a PC with Show Cue System.  It generally works flawlessly BUT  the video implementation is rather primitive.  It uses Windows Media Player for the playback engine.  No fades are available.  But for a 30 min Preshow video it works fine.  The show is All My Sons.   The video is a "backstory" of the war leading up to the incident that is the crux of the play.  Intermission continues the story.

Thanks for a great list.

thanks everyone again.  The problem appears to be in the Vegas encoding even though I have the latest Quicktime pro installed which is supposed to act as a plugin.
An .avi file works great in Qlab, audio and video, but is humongous.  The same file converted to h.264 in VideoMonkey works fine also.

Away we go.
