PNG or JPG

I know this has prob been asked before but I couldn't find a definitive solution

It seems both are fine, but JPG produces much smaller file sizes

I know the size of the image is a factor, but is is the KB?

My project is getting pretty huge now (over 1000 PNGs) and starting to grind a little...

A factor in what? And by “size” I assume you mean pixel dimensions, and by “KB” I assume you mean file size. Is that accurate?

Can you describe in more detail what you mean by “grind”?

I wondered does Qlab load smaller file-sizes quicker than larger ones? 

Say, you have a PNG 1920x1080 that's 1MB vs a JPG that's also 1920x1080 but 200k

Aha, that makes perfect sense!

The answer is yes, smaller files will load faster than larger ones, all other things being equal.

This is not always the case of course; mp3 files are 1/10th the size of AIFF files, but take more processing power to decode. H.264 videos are much smaller than ProRes, but take MUCH more processing power to decode.

BUT

If your workspace shows meaningful performance differences between 1MB still images and 200kB still images, then that might be a sign that your computer is not up to this task. 1MB is still a really small file to a modern computer.

QLab 5 video performance is definitively better than QLab 4 video performance, especially on Apple Silicon hardware. On my MacBook Pro the difference is dramatic and impossible to miss. No Apple Silicon-based Mac running QLab 5 should be showing performance problems displaying 1 megabyte PNG images.

So, if you’re experiencing something to the contrary that’s surely a sign that there is something else going on that warrants exploration. How many simultaneous cues are you running? How many video outputs are you using? What else is involved?

I encourage you to send a copy of your workspace, ideally together with a video showing the performance problem, to sup...@figure53.com so we can help you find the issue and address it.

Hi Sam,

I plugged it into my tele and did an experiment between 4/5. There was a lot more lag in the GO button in 5, but I was using a USB clicker which I've ditched now so I'll do another test

When you say video performance you mean PNG/JPG too?

Yep, still images count as video! They’re just video that doesn’t change.

Any situation in which QLab 4 seems to outperform QLab 5 on an Apple Silicon Mac should be something you contact support about.
