Hi --- I need a video cue to begin "paused" on the first frame of the video file until I fire "go" for it to start playing/moving. How can I do this in QLab 3? Thanks!

The attached jpeg shows a method that should generally work

In addition to what Mic suggested, another (not necessarily better) way would be to have a still image of the first frame as a separate cue, and then the full video as a second cue which plays whenever you’re ready.

I’m curious about Mic’s solution.  If that’s a Start All Children Simultaneously group, is it possible that the pause could fire before the video cue?  Would that mung it up?

One thing you have to be really careful with when using the still image method is ensuring a good colour match between your still and moving footage.

It's often Trickier than expected.

No; if the cues are nominally triggered at the same moment, they will be done in the order they are given in the list. In this case it should give you what you see. (Haven’t tested it myself, but it should.)

That said, there is a little “fuzziness” between the cues and their underlying “actions” / “engines”.  This is a requirement of mixing together different clocks (audio devices, video outputs, etc) in one workspace. While simultaneous cues will be fired in the order they’re shown, there are cases where this fuzziness might require you to add a tiny bit of wait time to ensure you get the result you want. One example would be re-starting a cue at the exact moment it is supposed to have stopped; the difference in the audio clock and the computer clock might mean that the audio is still playing when the computer thinks it should be done. In that case you might need to wait a fraction of a second before trying to restart the cue to ensure it actually restarts the cue.

I thought that as well, but I haven't been able to confuse it on the one machine I tested it on. I even tried just preloading the pause but not the video and that still worked. You could get a bit more margin by delaying the pause by 0.03

If you move the pause to before the video in the cuelist than it never works

Thanks so much, Mic! Your initial solution totally worked. Cheers!

Good, I think it's pretty robust as a method.

To test the likelihood of what would happen if there was a delay to a video being loaded I  tried grouping 12 HD videos in a fire all group inside another fire all group with the pause targeting the video group under the video group. Screenshot attached

Even with no preload It still seemed solid and the pause didn't operate until all the videos were loaded and playing the first frame.

Hey Mic - some followup.... do you know of anyway to control the rate/pace/tempo of a video pause? Like - a video plays and then comes to pause gradually instead of abruptly?

Yes I do! But your video file must have an audio track, even if it i silent (or pull the audio level down if it isn't)

Use a fade cue and on the audio effects tab you will find the fade rate control.

Use an auto follow to pause the video once it has slowed.
