For a straightforward QLab workspace, even the base config will be quite suitable.
For a complex audio-only show, I’d personally want to see 16 or 24 GB of RAM instead of the base 8. To me, “complex” here means lots of live audio effects and or routine use of more than six or eight simultaneous Audio cues.
By comparison, I’m running a moderately complex audio-only show right now on a base-config M1 MacBook Air, with regular use of four Audio cues at once, some reverb and EQ here and there, and it’s smooth as silk.
For a show with any substantial use of live video effects, more than one audience-facing display, and/or many simultaneous Video cues, I’d definitely recommend the M2 Pro-based model for its higher core count and double the memory bandwidth.
If it were me building a “not sure what I might need in the future” setup, I’d get the 10-core M2 Pro with 32 GB of RAM and the base 512 GB of storage; that’s $1700. If I could make it to 2000, I’d step up to the 12-core CPU and leave the storage alone.
I think the M2 Mini is a really stellar value.
