Hello all. I am working on a college projection design and I think I bit off more than I can chew.

I am trying to use Qlab and connect 3 projectors up to my computer (an iMac with a Thunderbolt port).  Each projector would be considered a separate screen and project separate images and video.

Any thoughts? I thought this was going to be easy but looks like I might be in trouble.

Any help is very grateful.

Best, - j.

HI J,

You do sound a little at sea with this.  Let’s start with some basics:  Which version of QLab are you using? Do you have a license to run Video with it?  You will need that to drive multiple outputs.

When you say you have an iMac with a Thunderbolt port, can you tell which model?  You can get that from the About This Mac under the Apple menu.  Also let me know what version of the operating system you have which should also be in theat display.

To drive discrete projectors (different images on each) you will need to connect each to the computer as a separate output.  If you only have one Thunderbolt port port you will have to get a bit creative.  Let me check into the capabilities of your iMac when you can get me the model and I’ll have a better idea of what you can do.

Best!

You can use a Triple Head Output device like this one...it outputs HDMI x 3

See https://www.startech.com/AV/Displayport-Converters/Mini-DisplayPort-Triple-Head-DisplayPort-Multi-Monitor-MST-Hub~MSTMDP123DP

Your iMac should have SSD drives, if you have standard spinning drive your video may not be delivered smoothly unless it is very basic codec. I use Apple ProRez422 @ 720P

Questions drop me an email anytime.

Hello all

That StarTech product looks pretty interesting, but there are a few reasons I'd be cautious about it.

First, the product page lists Windows compatibility but there's no mention of Mac compatibility.

Second, StarTech has a history of lousy video adapters. I can't point to any specific instances, but I have seen loads of complaints about them over the years.

Third, and related to the second, is that I generally avoid any computer hardware product that's markedly cheaper than its competitors. This is usually, though not always, a sign of corner-cutting. The Matrox TripleHead2Go (http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/th2go/displayport/) is the most common device of this kind, and it's about twice the price. The Datapath x4 line of products (https://www.datapath.co.uk/multi-display-products) are somewhat more expensive than that, although more feature-ful also.

So, I'm not saying this box won't work. Maybe it's terrific! But these are the reasons I would be skeptical at first.

Best
Sam

Jumping on to what Sam said:  I actually like StarTech VGA over Cat5 extenders - never had a problem with them.  I don’t have much experience with the rest of their products.

Splitting video output is a tricky thing and even Matrox, who’s been in the game a long time, gets pretty finicky about what their configuration is.

I would be _very_ interested to know if anyone has experience about this StarTech widget.

Yes Sam that StarTech is MST DP1.2 so will NOT WORK on the Mac, my bad for not catching that. Look for an inexpensive work around for the "low budget" Reel may have.

I have a DP Triple Head I'd be happy to share (loan) you Reel, drop me a note.
