Hi all.

Anyone used the MOTU 828x with thunderbolt with QLab yet? Or any other interface running via thunderbolt instead of FireWire? Curious how they're working out.

Thanks,
-Staab

I would never trust Thunderbolt in show conditions.   I can dislodge my external drives connected via Thunderbolt by simply typing on my Macbook Pro.  I want Firewire back!

Interesting you say that, I've always found FireWire 800 ports to be very lose.  I usually velcro-tie the FireWire cable to the adjacent Thunderbolt port (17" MBP) (or Mini-Displayport, depending on the show) because it's always been very solid for me.  The 2 thunderbolt ports on my 15" Retina MBP have been quite solid as well.  I wonder if the locking mechanism on your machine is not working properly.

On another note, I'm quite frustrated with all these I/O devices that don't have a Thunderbolt pass-thru port on it.  It seems like all the A/V interfaces have this problem, while the data storage ones don't.  Makes it quite difficult to connect a display and the device at the same time for me.

With respect, I might recommend reconsidering this stance.

Not since SCSI was ousted have we had a real locking connector, and a number of solutions have emerged for strain relief that work just as well for Thunderbolt as they do for FireWire and USB, or TRS for that matter. The New York area rental shops, for example, generally use plastic zip ties to secure computer cables to rack rails or other nearby solid surfaces, so that there is no tension on the connector.

I certainly understand the frustration, but in show conditions I believe this particular problem is neatly solve-able.

Aside from fearing the connectors to fall out, has anyone had any good or bad experiences with Thunderbolt audio interfaces and QLab? Or in a studio set-up? Are they as reliable as a firewire interface?

Thanks for any insight you might have.

Cheers,

I was reminded just this morning about my other problem with Thunderbolt.  Sometimes devices simply will not show up, this happens frequently with both my external hard drives and my audio devices.  It usually takes resetting the connection a few times or changing to the other port to get the device to get recognized.  This behavior seems completely random, I can never predict when it will happen.

For a device that's secured in a rack, this could really become a hassle.

Have you ever tried getting that computer serviced, or tried another computer?  I have a lot of Macs I handle on a regular basis (many with Thunderbolt) and I've never seen the problems you describe.

I think you have marginal cables or a marginal computer. I've never seen that kind of issue.

To the OP.

I very much suspect that the thunderbolt MOTU is actually implemented by embedding a Thunderbolt to FireWire chip inside the existing FireWire design. The fact it has no FireWire port and only one Thunderbolt port adds to my suspicions.

If this is correct then the 828x would be no different to a 828 mk III used with an Apple thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor.

Paul's comment about an internal Thunderbolt to FireWire makes sense to me too.. particularly in light of the way Focusrite is advertising some of their interfaces as FireWire/Thunderbolt with a little tiny * indicating that they are really FireWire but work with Apple's Thunderbolt to FW adapter (which I think is very unclear and bad marketing but I wonder how many similar things are going on...)

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to chime in here! We designed and built the new Thunderbolt implementation from the ground up for the 828x. It's full-bandwidth, fully-certified Thunderbolt. It's not simply a wrapper around FireWire.

Thanks!
