I just got this message from V2.3.8 and wonder if it's related to what you're experiencing:

MP3 WARNING

Due to a bug in QuickTime, QLab may fail to play long MP3 files.

You can check for this problem by looking for silence at the end of the waveform, in the audio inspector.

If your file does not play, convert MP3 files to a non-compressed format such as WAV or AIFF to work around this problem.

I've never seen the message before - something that was included recently?

However, I loaded Madame George by Van Morrison, and it only loads in the first 6:32 of the song, then abruptly has 3 minutes of silence before the next song. I could fade it out, but it sounds pretty sudden, and I could also change the music, as it is just pre-show sound, but I really love the song. Does anyone know why it doesn't load the whole thing?

From the 2.3.7 release notes:

"FIXED: QLab will now warn you that long MP3 files may not play correctly."

Yes, Apple have declined to fix this bug in QuickTime. The message was
put in at the list's request in 2.3.7 after this bug caused a problem
in a show situation.

I'm afraid batch audio conversion under OS X is harder than it should
be, Max from sbooth.org supports many formats but is basically
unmaintained as the author seems to have abandoned his opensource
software to concentrate on his proprietary software.

XLD is maintained but can only read a restricted set of formats which
don't include MP3.

Perhaps a opportunity for a low cost utility from figure53 :)

Batch conversion of mp3s is in the "Audio toolkit" tab. If you fancy paying for it, it might make it easier for me to find time to update this app! (And pay someone to fix my site.)

Alternatively:

You can also convert to a variety of file formats right in iTunes. You have to go to Preferences and set your Import Settings to be the file format you want to convert to, and then select all the mp3s (or other files) you want to convert, from within iTunes, and choose Convert To Wav (or whatever you chose in Preferences) from the Advanced menu.

You can but personally I keep my sound engineering and my iTunes
library completely separate otherwise I end up very confused.

I've yet to find an actually useful digital asset management system for
OS X.

I'm sure you've seen it but at least in my case AudioFinder from www.icedaudio.com has been ideal for this kind of thing.

Have you used AudioFinder?

http://www.icedaudio.com/

Great little program, and can do all of these little conversions for you. And Amazing to be able to select a portion of audio in AF and drag it to a PT or DP session without importing the entire file.
