Hi everyone,

I'm very happy to announce a brand new application to our lineup: QCart.

http://figure53.com/qcart/

We think it's a nice companion to QLab. We're pricing it at 50% off as an introductory deal.

Feedback welcome!

Best,
Chris

Very neat. Purchased.

Some suggestions: could you add a few extras?

I'd like a nasty squeaky noise when I press play, programable wow and flutter, sudden unexpected stops, long delays in resetting to the top of cues, variable cue-tone bleed-thru into audio channels, added tape hiss, a NR switch that loses all the top end along with the hiss, and a random clattering noise to signify that the operator has just knocked over a pile of carts.

Then it'll be just like the old days...

Seriously, a nice piece of work; well done - again.

Regards,

John

Scary timing. I was just doing an event where I was forced to use Jingle Palette on Windows. I was thinking that there has to be something better.

Now there is.

Love it!

Is the idea that you can have both Qlab & Qcart side by side on the screen
without any issues other than screen space?

Nutty Nutcracker might just be a fun experience this year:)

Some immediate thoughts:
  • Integrated fade envelope
  • Group plug-ins by manufacturer (I have dozens of AU plug-ins; it's a very long list when presented flat!)
  • Ability to re-order plug-ins by drag & drop
  • Have drag & drop multiple files populate multiple empty cells left-to-right (like in Battery)
  • Calibrated volume faders, with gain as well as attenuation (as in QLab) - possibly too fancy for the simple interface
  • Alt-drag cell to copy
  • Copy & paste cells
  • Drag selection from waveform onto a cell to make a new clip (like Snapper)
  • Make the keyboard triggers work in windows that aren't frontmost so you can have multiple documents open at once routed to different outputs (MIDI triggering does work like this - and works in the background)
  • Varispeed
  • AppleScript ;P
  • I've also found that the fact that the Hot Key moves with the clip when you drag it to another cell possibly counter-intuitive, particularly as it's quite hard to fit a Finder window on screen with the interface so that you can drop files onto any cell (unless you make QCart as small as possible). Also, this behaviour is not consistent with the ability to add duplicate triggers (eg: changing the first cell to "Q" does not change the cell below to "1", but dragging from the cell below onto it does swap the triggers)
  • Perhaps double-clicking an empty cell could bring up a file dialog, like the target button?
  • We appear to be on MIDI channel 1, but it'd be nice to set that…
  • It does something funny if you try to drag a clip from one document into another where that keyboard trigger is in use
  • It might be my not being used to my new funky MacBook Pro keyboard, but I have managed to trick a "play-whilst-key-down" cell into playing on release when it is set to loop - but not every time
Great utility nonetheless! I really like the fact that you can get the sounds to only play while you hold down a key - and stop on a note off! Although, they also stop on another note on - so maybe a manual will help… I'm only testing by sending MIDI from QLab as I don't have a MIDI keyboard to hand…

I suppose the hard thing is going to be not turning it into QLab, eg: by adding the ability to trigger fade outs on clips, and so on. When will we be seeing this in the iTunes store?

Qcart function in Qlab 3?

Another reason to upgrade!

This is fantastic feedback, thanks Rich. A number of these were already in our issues list, but others were not.

Some of these we're aiming at adding for 1.1 (which is also when we'll discontinue the discount).

As a general point of protocol, would people want us to start a separate list for QCart discussions? Seems like a great community here, and similar products, but I don't want to spam folks with unwanted email more than we already do. :-)

Better hit the hay. Been a long week.

Best,
Chris

How do the AU effects work?

I would think it should be inserted per cart so each one can be it's own
thing but so far I can't figure out how to insert one.

If the AU plugins are on the main buss & are cart dependent, I'm not
hearing the plugin.

I did try to drag a plugin onto a cart but it just crashed Qcart so
obviously I'm missing something.

Is it possible to have a load to time function?

I can see how this might be a great "rehearsal" tool for dance companies &
schools performing musicals to recorded music.

Also if there was a way to import (in order) the carts from Qcart into
Qlab with the base levels & beginning & ending times maintained, that
would make it easy to start with Qcart & graduate into Qlab once a certain
"certainty" is reached during rehearsals.

How cool!

Must just be the MH channel strip plug in causing the issues for me
because apple AU plugins seem to work per cue & don't crash. For example,
the AU pitch plugin works fine.

btw. QCart is sweet. It only took me 3 minutes of playing with it to buy a license, and I'm not even a sound guy. I can totally see bringing it up on the laptop and going to dinner, telling the dancers "Just hit the number of whichever track you want to play"

i am in favor of keeping the qcart commentary on the same list as qlab, at least for now.

I don't mind a single point of contact. My vote is to have it all-in-one.  (Braces for impact...)

Seconded.

Is version 1.2 with video playback coming soon? ;)

Forgot to answer this:

Since this is our first application that could potentially reach a larger market, the app store may be justified. We're definitely considering it.

My biggest concerns with the app store are:

1) It prevents us from rolling out rapid updates, for bug fixes.

2) It prevents us from contacting customers who may need help but do not contact us directly. For example, it has become a common issue among developers I know that someone will leave an App Store review detailing problems they are having, which the developer would be able to easily fix or clarify, but there is no way to contact the customer. I know at least one developer who removed his app from the store entirely because this became too frustrating and prevented him from providing the level of customer support he desired.

Therefore, we're definitely considering the App Store for QCart, but at the very least we'll want to spend some time to make sure we go in prepared.

I kind of meant iOS, actually: iTunes store, not App Store. I've been disappointed with the App Store: it needs to automatically check for updates like Software Update does, instead of relying on you to periodically open it and check the Updates tab... It seems like App Store apps can't check for updates automatically themselves - and you're right that they often end up lagging behind the current versions available direct from the manufacturer.

Yes, an iOS version would be great. This on an iPad would be perfect
for a lot of the education projects our theatre puts on....
Very nice!

I agree. I just bought two licenses, one for me and one for the college,
and I sent an email to all my mac based students and alums to take a look
- an iPad version would be dynamite for rehearsals.

Nice work on this QLab team! Brilliant app.

I think Qcart could be the missing link between early rehearsals & moving
into Qlab.

Especially if there was a SKIP BACK feature that could RR X seconds.

Whatever cue / cues is playing, button X = SKIP BACK 10/ 15/ 20/ 30 secs.

Then being able to import the list into Qlab as a starting point of order,
level & adjusted cue length would be super D duper!!!

With a cue selected, click in the waveform to place the playhead there. Not as simple as a button, but tons better than holding rewind on a CD player. Just like "V" to preview in QLab.

Not to hijack the thread, but I find Garage Band's Podcast features to be a great way of handling rehearsals. Import your tracks & then create chapter headings at the head, before the first chorus & likewise (you can name them too).

Then just use the chapter list to jump back & forth as needed.

I'm guessing QCART can't do video? (Not on Lion - yet!) Perhaps
something for the future - loads of VJ uses if it could.

Oh, and Air display - we use it for presenter countdowns from qlab -
they never seem to figure out that we have control over the imagery -
it's magic!!

I'll let Chris touch on the video question. I just thought I'd point out that while QCart is Lion-friendly, you don't need Lion to run it. It will work on Snow Leopard as well.

Good work on that!

I must say, as to plugin management, I really like the way Reaper handles it. Worth a look.
And a search box could be very useful.

Keep on the good work,
