I'm trying to understand how to do a simple panning effect across a group of speakers. I am simply trying to get a sound to "travel" across an array of 6 speakers.  I understand that this is achieved with fade cues, and I was able to achieve the panning of a stereo file on two speakers by following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS7m-YYikkc.  However, when I then try to achieve this on a multichannel system, I cannot get the same result.

The sound will fade out on the first channel, but then nothing will fade in on the second channel. Should I be using a stereo file, or mono? Should the outputs for each speaker be set to -INF and the fade cue targeting that audio cue will handle raising the output? Trying to wrap my head around all this.

Hi maseFace,

One thing to check before you start is that the crosspoints matrix of your audio cue is routing the channels of your file to all the outputs that you will eventually want to hear them on.

For example, a single-channel (mono) audio file will, by default, only be routed to the first output of the cue, so only that output could ever get any audio signal to it (unless a fade cue is used to change the routing).

Thus, one way you could use fade cues to redirect audio is by fading up and down the actual crosspoints to reroute the signal from the one channel to the various outputs.

Does that help?

Here's a workspace that continuously does a quad pan around 4 speakers which you could adapt.

You can set the pan times all at once by putting the time to go from one speaker to the next i.e ¼ of the auto pan  cycle in the post wait of the group cue.

The curves could do with a bit of work to make it as smooth as possible
