Hi,
Before with QLab4 when we choose a partial screen we could have the first picture. See the grid and see the workspace.
Now with QLab5 we can only see the grid with black around (picture2).
Do I make a mistake? Or it's not anymore possible?
Thank You

Hi there,

As of QLab 5.1, you can again show both light and dark grids, via this button at the bottom left of the stage editor window:

Hello,
Maybe I expressed myself badly. It's not the color of the grid that interests me but the transparency.
I mean that with Qlab4 you could see the rest of the screen when projecting a video on a partial screen.
Now you can't see through and everything is black. I can no longer see the rest of my screen.
In the example I took the grid but it's the same with a picture or a text.
Thank you

Ah! Apologies, yes, this was a change in v5 that does not have a direct way to go back to the same behavior in v4.

Although if you're looking to project part of a screen you can do so with things like NDI Scan Convertor.

Ok thank you. I can stop looking at. :-)
I will try with NDI

On the odd occasions a partial screen is handy (e.g.Demonstrating  content of a QLab5 output route rather than a stage, on a single display) ,you can always just syphon into a QLab 4 Partial screen!

thank you micpool.
But it's a little bit heavy for what I want.
it's more for a little coquetry that I sometimes use to not forget information.

See below.

If you’re just looking to have some video on screen, I suggest that you:

  • create a stage which goes to Syphon or NDI
  • open a stage monitor window
  • the end.

Yes it's a good idea.
But ... I have to keep always the monitor window to the front. It's not a big deal.
Thanks for helping me.

The monitor window has a checkbox labeled “Float”.

When you check this box, the window will stay floating on top of all other windows.

Yes but the monitor window is there permanently

I think what Gui liked about the QLab 4 partial screen is that it appears above everything when a cue runs and vanishes with its window  as soon as the video cue stops

Ah, I see.

Well, yes, this is a difference.

The closest  you can do with QLab5 is to do Sam's suggestion as a Banner.
The minimum height of a monitor window is 200 pixels plus the title bar. It's a permanent imposition on your screen real estate,  but  on a 1920 x1200 monitor you still get a 1080p display of the QLab workspace, plus a single line video  display the is large enough to catch the attention! You can also use it for clocks timers, animated emojis,  or anything other widgets that can be realised with QLab's video tools.

For a similar effect if you want a screen that will go away...

I used to do the same thing, where I would have a video of our university mascot holding a countdown timer to give a 30 second warning.
Now in QLab 5 I changed over to using an app on GitHub by Figure53 called QDisplay. https://github.com/Figure53/QDisplay
It doesn't let me use a custom video image, but it is much more versatile.

This isn't a very large popup, but you can make it bigger.

I put 2 script cues in a timeline group. In this example I put a 32 second prewait on the second cue, and it makes a 32 second block that I can easily drag around in the outer timeline group that this is nested inside, making it very easy to just snap to the end of a video or set of tracks.
The 32 seconds duration is so I can provide a 30 second warning, so it gives me 2 seconds to notice it and announce it on comms.

You can change the message size with "set messageSize to [number]" There's more information on the github link on how to customize it more.

I realized you can easily hide and unhide the application to make it go away when not wanted.

So the first script I have in the timeline group is:
tell application "QDisplay"
set timeRemaining to 32
set message to "30 Seconds Remaining"
set messageColor to "Red"
end tell
tell application "System Events"
set visible of application process "QDisplay" to true
end tell

And the second script cue I have with a 32 second prewait in this example is:
tell application "System Events"
set visible of application process "QDisplay" to false
end tell

I had never heard of QDisplay. Thanks for the information I will have a look.

Hi Taylor
Thanks, I had forgotten you could  set the visible of window

reminded of that I have knocked to gather a quick proof of concept app that can emulate the QLab 4 behaviour

This software is distributed without any warranties as to its reliability or suitability for your intended use. It is the users responsibility to assess whether the software is suitable for use on their systems.

Resizeable Syphon Window with content detector

Syphon Input: micsWindow

OSC out: 127.0.0.1:53000

/cue/BLNK/start --when window is blank

/cue/CONT/start -- wnem window is showing content

/cue/CONT/notes {width height topLeftX topLeftY} --puts window coordinates in QLab notes for setting syphon routing dimensions

Screenshot 2023-04-29 at 13.52.57.png

Content is sent to a syphon output. If there is any content to display the Window becomes visible and floats. When the window goes blank again it is hidden.

Demo Screen Recording Attached.

(This was thrown together in an hour, as a proof of concept  so hasn't been tested extensively, use at your own risk, and don't use for shows unless you are confident it is stable on your setup. )

App and Demo Workspace can be downloaded here (No content 9MB):
