I'll try to be brief... and clear. Please excuse any mistake and don't
hesitate to point out any "unclear" explanation.
I'll have to design a show in a theatre I don't know at all in Berlin
AND this show, after its premiere there, will be presented in Canada
two days after. The mixing boards and PA are completely different from
one place to another, so to cut on the time of setup in Canada I
wanted to go the 1:1 way, i.e. each one of the 16 outputs of the
interface would be plugged in a speaker (thru the board, but only for
routing) and all level adjustments will be performed in QLab. This
way, I calibrate each speaker to more or less what I had in Berlin,
and the cues will play about 90% right in Canada.
I've been using this type of setup before with great success, but
there is a very good chance the director I work with, this time, will
ask me to follow the action and fade in and out certain sources at
certain points. We don't have enough time in rehearsals to think that
I'll be able to get to the "perfect" fade (time and level) every time,
so I'm trying to figure out a way to control CERTAIN cues.
I'm sure 75% of what I'll play would be "fixed", i.e. I can program
all the levels and fades in QLab as always, but I reckon I'll need
some level control, and I'd hate to do it on the board, as I may be
playing two soundfiles assigned at different levels to 11 outputs,
let's say, and only wanting to bring the level of one CUE down, not
both...
I'd be lovely if you could assign the overall gain of a sound cue to a
midi message and use a controller to play with it, but we know it
doesn't work that way...
I was considering using only 12 outputs in 1:1 configuration and keep
4 other channels of QLab as "controllable" by another software, maybe,
and do the routing of those cues on the board, but I don't know what I
could be using for this with QLab...
Anyway, I think you get the idea, so ANY input will be appreciated...
and if it leads to a solution, MAY be rewarded by a cheesy Berlin
souvenir... :D
Many thanks,

- A thumb is a terrible speller. Please forgive my trespasses.
Unless I misunderstand the question and requirements, would this not
be much easier done directly on the mixer than midi programming
anyways??? how is the mixer redistributing your sends?? though auxes/
groups/matrixes?? how about EQs and delays how are these dealth with,
chances are the different venues would not have the same speakers and
the same in hall placement etc......2 cues to 11 speakers does not
seem a terribly difficult task....just lower that master
fader ......unless your are talking about bringing down cue 1's mix 3
level only and not cue 2's mix 3 etc.....perhaps more details??

Air Display
& I immediately thought of how it might be useful with Qlab.
Since during tech most of the time, I'm just watching the cue list work as
it's run by the operator but tying my own Mac Book Pro up in the process
via screen sharing. If I could buy an IPAD, throw it in the rack drawer &
use it for the same purpose, that would be really cool. Not sure if the
screen would be big enough to actually edit in Qlab or not. Anyone using
one this way (with Air Display or VNC?
More importantly, in QLab, if I could view the second screen (video
output) instead of flipping back & forth on my regular screen, that would
allow me to use the IPAD (as the video output) for a project I'm working
on.
I'm presuming the hitch is that Qlab has to have access to a real second
screen before an app like Air Display would have access...
So the question would be, is there a way to set up a second "virtual
screen" that meets Qlab video output requirements but then can be shown
via something like Air Display?
Maybe the only way to do this would be to have a physical dummy screen
stashed somewhere to allow the IPAD / IPOD / IPHONE to show the video.
Thoughts on if this can work & how?
