Hi all,

Has anyone used the AirBeam app as a Syphon input for Camera Cues? I'm wanting to try out using something like this for an upcoming show and was curious to see if people have any experience with using this in a show condition. The show is basically begging for having some type of live feed from an actor onstage. I'm somewhat wary of having them schlep a cabled camera all across the stage, but I also clearly want something that is dependable. Open to other suggestions for doing a wireless approach.

Thanks in advance!
Jeromy

I use it all the time, and it’s magnificent. Here’s what’s needed to make it work well:

1. Use a very high quality wifi router.
2. Put ONLY the iOD device on the wifi. Connect the Mac via ethernet.
3. Put the wifi router as close to the stage as possible.
4. Put the iOS device into Airplane mode, then turn wifi back on.

Good luck!

Sam

Thanks Sam. That's great news. Very excited to try this.

Sam,
do you have recommendations on routers that have been good to you?
not necessarily looking for figure53 official, more 'experience' official.

Thanks!

I personally have had great results with Apple Airport Extreme routers.

I also like the higher-end Netgear routers.

I also trust thewirecutter.com on matters like these.

Hi Sam or Jeromy- could you clarify a bit the setup how this works? When I launch QLab with Airbeam and the Syphon Simple Server/Simple Client (I tried this on both QLab 3 and 4), QLab recognizes Simple Server as an input, not Airbeam. The Syphon Server does not seem to be finding Airbeam- it only gives an option for Simple Client. Was there a Quartz Composer Library or something else you needed to make this work? (Running this on OSX 10.11).

Andy,

I haven't set it up yet, myself. This whole teaching thing keeps getting in the way of my design fun. =)

Hi Sam,

I'm getting around to following up on this, and I have a couple of questions. First, can you run this on a computer-to-computer network? I was playing around with it and having very jumpy video feed. Wasn't sure if that was due to not using a wifi router. Also, I can't seem to get it to generate a Syphon feed. I'm looking in QLab, as well as Syphon recorder and a feed just isn't showing up. I know this isn't your product, but I was curious if you have any difficulty in it making a feed before?

Thanks,
Jeromy

Hi all,

I am having a similar problem of Airbeam connecting to Syphon, Syphon does appear as a camera input, but I cannot get Airbeam to connect to Syphon.

I would really like to use this solution if it can work, but seem stuck at this step.

You run the AirBeam Pro.app on the mac with QLab

The syphon feed for this should show up automatically in the camera menu as AirBeam Pro-{Phone Name}. If you already have 8 camera inputs you will need to go into settings/Video to assign one of the slots to Airbeam.

Make sure you are running the latest versions of AirBeam Pro and Airbeam and that the phone and computer are on the same wifi network.

So, I have run this on different Macs (all on the High Sierra operating system, but different generations). All have QLab 4 (March update), the Syphon Simple Client and Server and Airbeam Pro, latest update available. The phones have all been iPhone 6s with Airbeam Pro, most recent version. I can successfully have the phones connect to the computers and I see them in the Airbeam window. I can see the Syphon feed in QLab, but for some reason Syphon and Airbeam are not talking and have gone down the rabbit hole of blogs on both as well as contacted Appologics with no reply. I am a bit out of options and can transfer to another camera app but want to make sure that I am not making some sort of obvious mistake first.

Have you opened the camera in Airbeam? The display in the airbeam pro  is just showing you the available feeds. You need to click on the camera so it opens in a window (bottom left on screenshot. It works fine on my High Sierra test setup

Yes, I do have the camera set up and it is functional to Airbeam. I have opened and started things in multiple orders to no avail. Syphon is definitely working via QLab because I can cue the simple server and it appears in my screen output.

OK Just to double check........

I know you have the camera set up and you can see it in the Airbeam Window. What I asked is if you had clicked the camera preview image in the airbeam window to open the camera in a separate window in airbeam. You may well have done this but your reply doesn't specifically mention this step.

As obvious as that was, I had NOT done that. Problem solved. Thank you so much! Lauren

Hey everybody!

I’m once again using AirBeam and airbeam pro for a show. I can turn the light of the phone on and off in airbeam pro.

Does anyone know if I can also do that in qlab? And has anyone found a workaround for switching the rear and front facing cameras remotely?

Cheers, happy holidays

This is a button on the Mac Airbeam Pro App so it may be possible to do this with UI scripting in a script cue in QLab.

This is a settings option  on Airbeam on the phone itself, so as far as I know this is not possible.
