I'm not very experienced with MIDI assignments, so this could be simple.. In MainStage 3 I've assigned buttons to send MIDI for triggering cues in QLAB. Every MIDI message I attempt to assign/send via an external channel strip from the MIDI output tab in Mainstage is received by QLab as a Control Change 122 message -no matter what I specify (Program Change, Channel Pressure, changes in value, etc.)    Any help?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Not sure what you are trying to do. Would an onscreen drum pad in MainStage 3 sending a note on message to trigger a Qlab cue work for you?. This is the simplest way to set up onscreen controls in Mainstage to trigger Qlab cues.  If this would work I can send you some screenshots to show you how to set it up.

Thanks Mic -I want to run MainStage as 1) my on screen interface and 2) for live input processing, but also have QLab running in the background to handle audio/video file playback (MainStage is too limited in file playback and routing  possibilities for my needs)  As such, I want to assign  MainStage buttons, preferably at the patch level, to trigger (via the MIDI trigger function) the start/stop of audio/video cues in QLab.  If I use the "capture" feature of a QLab cue to receive an incoming MIDI message from MainStage, no matter what I send from MainStage it ends up as "Control Change / Control 122 / Value 0".  And, I can't figure out how to reconcile the MIDI parameter descriptions available in MainStage with the descriptors in QLab.

Hope that's clear.  I imagine your screenshoots would be helpful regardless, and most appreciated too!

thanks -RC

In Qlab3  Settings Setup MIDI controls to Use Musical MIDI. I am using ch16

Create a Mainstage Patch and put a drum pad in the layout. Assign the hardware input to something ( if you are not using hardware inputs assign it to an unused IAC bus)

In Mainstage 3 Edit

Add an external instrument channel strip

Name it Qlab

Route it to Bus 1 IAC CH16

Route Input and output to None
(You could have Qlab send 2 channels of audio into this by creating a cabled loopback if you wanted to do some crazy stuff like vocode Qlab audio cues in MainStage)

 Screenshot MainStage 3 Channel Strip.jpg

In Mainstage 3 Edit

Select drum pad

Assign Qlab Midi Notes C-2 to pad

In Mainstage edit Assignments

Turn off send unassigned MIDI to all channel strips
(This is probably what is causing your Qlab MIDI trigger captures to fail)

Screenshot MainStage 3 Unassigned MIDI.jpg

In Qlab 3
Create a cue
Switch MIDI Trigger On
Click Capture
In Mainstage Perform
Click drum pad

Trigger is captured

Enter  'any' into velocity window

That should then work.
