Hello all,
We have had enough reports of crashes with the most recent security update of macOS Catalina - Security Update 2021-007 - that a warning is warranted. This security update made some large changes to things like graphics drivers and core audio that appear to cause problems with some older Macs.

If you are using an older Mac with integrated Intel HD4000 graphics card, the driver update included in the security update may cause a number of applications, QLab among them, to crash on open. The best solution for now is to restore your mac from a backup from before the update.

Beware that update, and, of course, we recommend waiting on installing any first release of the macOS - like Monterey - for a reliable QLab system

Thanks for you post.

I'm in this situation myself... just reverted to a previous TimeMachine backup and QLab is working again. I'm on a Late 2012 MacMini running Catalina.

Is a patch in Qlab expected to take care of this in the future, or are we stuck in this Catalina version for the moment?

Thanks,

Diogo

Hello Diogo,

Unfortunately I do not yet know if this is something we can fix in QLab. For starters, we have had trouble even getting our hands on a machine affected by this bug. So if there is a potential fix in QLab, it would not happen quickly.

With help from one of the people encountering the bug, we have provided Apple more information about the underlying issue, and we hope that they will release an update at some point, but that too I do not know for sure.

Long story short: yes we are stuck with this bug for the moment, and the only way to avoid it is to roll back to an earlier version of the OS, or upgrade to a newer one.

Best,
Chris

Hi List,

On researching, which Macs actually are affected, I got the following list according to Mactracker:

MacBook Pro:
- every MBPro from MBPro9,2 (13“, MId 2012) to MBPro10,1 (Retina, 15“, Early 2013).

With the exception of the following MBPros, which may not come with an
integrated Intel HD4000 graphics card
but may use another card:
- MBPro9,1 (15“, Mid 2012)
MBPro10,1 (Retina, 15“, Mid 2012)
MBPro10,1 (Retina, 15“, Early 2013).

MacBook Air:
MBAir5,1 (11“, Mid 2012)
- MBAir5,2 (13“, Mid 2013).

iMac:
iMac13,1 (21.5", Early 2013).

MacMini:
MacMini6,1 + MacMini6,2 (Late 2012).
Server MacMini6,2 (Late 2012).

Did I miss any?

With kindest regards…
…Maik Waschfeld

Hello all

Update 008 does indeed entirely solve the problem.

As you so rarely hear me say: please install this system update quite as soon as you can.

Best
Sam
