Hi, at the moment I’m using the venues Wi-Fi connection to use Qlab remote from my phone & MacBook, but I wanted a portable solution for venues with no Wi-Fi

I heard an Apple Airport Express was a good solution  https://amzn.eu/d/bHdYJ5G

Would this be the best way to go?

I always bring my own WiFi router. I also run it without internet access. That keeps it free of any other traffic and makes sure everything is responsive. Also, if you are running an ETC light board you’re not supposed to hook it up to the internet, so my show control network is always isolated. If I need to stream something, it happens outside of my control network.  I haven’t used Apple Airport Express, so I can’t help you with that.

Thanks Dave. I'm noting using lights, just an iPad / iPhone on stage which would hopefully mirror my Qlab Macbook via private network.

That's good to know, so I'd imagine any portable router would do it.

I would go with a commercial or enterprise level system. Ubiquiti make some fabulous stuff, and a good value.
My best results on the road have been with Ruckus WAPs. For example, never lost connectivity in the London O2 Arena with over 100 other WAPs active before load in.
The Ruckus WAPs are a bit pricey, but what is your show worth?
Home grade stuff might not compete well in a high-RF environment.

Thanks! Venues are under 150-200 audience. So nothing too epic, Hopefully around 50-sh £. Just something hopefully with a plug built in and no extra wires.

Apple stopped making AirPorts in 2018. That is a first generation AirPort Express, discontinued in 2012 (I think). I bought mine in 2004; it has not been useful for years as it is not even seen by AirPort Utility 6 and above: https://bristleconeit.com/freeware/launcher-for-airport-utility-v5-6-1/, although I doubt very much you could get AirPort Utility 5.6.1 working in a macOS that is compatible with a recent version of QLab…

You are going to have to buy a third party WAP. Professionally, I’ve used Ruckus – also at the O2 – and Ubiquiti, and currently tour EnGenius thanks to Stage Sound Services. You can pick an EnGenius up for £110: https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/products/31252-engenius-eap1250/, but you need to research if that is the right product for you (as you could also spend up to £1k on one…).

Thanks all. Regarding the EnGenius you linked, that seems to not require mains adapter - Does it power via the MacBook?

It’s PoE, so you’d need an injector if not using a PoE switch. As I said, you need to do your own research about which product is right for you.

Ok thanks, sounds like I need to read up on PoE injectors.
Thanks again

I'm finding that QLab Remote "GO" latency is too high, even standing close to one of our meshed Ruckus WAPs.

You are probably well aware of this but just in case…..

QLab remote GO button, only triggers QLab when it is released.

The QLab remote trigger on finger up behaviour also extends to carts, which means  it can't be used as a remote for cart buttons that have a second trigger on release behaviour, e.g an audio cart that plays for as long as the cart button is held down.

Interestingly, when triggered by a mouse, a  QLab cart button in show mode triggers on mouse down, but in edit mode triggers on mouse up (on the play roundel).
