Hello everybody.
Has anyone worked with RME Digiface Dante?
Do you know if it is possible to assign the 64 Dante channels and the 64 MADI channels in different Audio Paths of Qlab?

Thanks a lot

Hi Ralph,

Sorry, the Digiface Dante was in use as stand-alone converter between Dante and MADI.
But now I have it and try to figure it out.

So you want to put out 128 channels via USB3?
Not sure, if that’s a good idea, though.
Depending on the machine, you’ll be using.

If I understand QLab correctly, it can assign the channels 1 to 64 of one device by „Audio Patch“ in the „Audio settings".
No way to get to channels 65 to 128.

You can get to channels 64 to 128 of the Digiface by using the „Matrix View“’s possibilities in RME’s „Totalmix FX.app" but the „bottleneck“ is QLab’s maximum on 64 channels per device driver.

Or, that RME just offers a „whole package“ device driver (channels 1 to 128) and not as separated drivers for the Dante- and the MADI-part of their device.

On Ableton’s LIVE, there is no max. number of channels, I’m aware of, at least I can get to the channel 128.

Hi Ralph,

The comment on LIVE got me thinking and so I digged deeper.

What I did:

- using the normal Digiface Dante driver to get to channels 1 to 64 from QLab to the Dante outs of the interface.
- installed „Blackhole“, a 16 channel virtual audio driver from <https://existential.audio/blackhole/> and used that as second Audio Patch from QLab.
„Blackhole" is an open source virtual Audio driver, which can be customized with Xcode to support 256+ audio channels and, when supplied with differrent UIDs, can be active with multiple instances.
The source code is at GitHub.
-> You have to „build" your own 64 channels-Blackhole.

- started up LIVE and used the Blackhole device as inputs of the Audio Channels and routing them to the MADI outs (channels 65 and up) of the Digiface:

- and here’s a cutout of Totalmix:

Another alternative without the detour thru Blackhole and LIVE would be „Loopback“ from Rogue Amoeba, but that’s commercial software and a nightmare to setup for this environment.
Especially, if you have to use it on more than one machine.

Thank you very much for your answers Maik.
It has been very valuable information for me.

Let me check all this and the feasibility within the sound installation.

Again, thank you very much for your interest.

Best

Ralph
