I'm having a very strange problem -

Put in a new system - latest Mini with Mountain Lion - using a USB monitor for the qlab window and the thunderbolt (to vga) for the projector.

Tascam US-1641 audio interface - which I know sucks, but has worked fine in the past...

the interface works fine with my other audio stuff - Itunes, Megaseg etc...

When I load a video it plays fine and plays fine in Quicktime Player 7

when I open in in Quicktime Player X I get "The document {filename.mov} could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-101)"

strangely enough, when I switch the audio device to built in output in control pannel, it works fine.

In Qlab (configured for either output) I don't get any erors or red Xes but when I try to play the cue, the projector goes black as usual, but the video never plays.  It acts like the cue completed even though it didn't do anything.

Any ideas?

BTW - same video works fine on other computers.  Other videos (or at lest transcoded versions of this video) do the same thing on this computer.

Hi, Andy.

Can you give just a wee bit more information?

1) Where is the video "sitting?" Is it local, or from YouTube...or ???

2) What type of movie file is it? Is it Animation codec? H.264? .WMV?

Perhaps these things aren't germain to the problem, but it doesn't hurt
to eliminate them...

Video is on the local HD of the machine - it was produced by the video services group at UNH - I've run dozens of their videos though Qlab with no problems.

It's Quicktime, photojpeg codec, 720p resolution - which is what we always do (and incidentally, it works fine everywhere, including qlab, on another computer)

if the video plays correctly when you aren't using the Tascam as the audio interface but doesn't when you do, try a different audio device. As you state, the device is substandard. Maybe there is some driver issue or something. If a different audio I/o works, eBay the Tascam and get back to other things.

Maybe I'm not understanding the whole situation though.

Hmm.

As a test, can you re-encode it as an H.264 to see if it behaves any differently?

As an aside, I have two MacBook Airs I bought and they don't like to output 16:9 resolutions over VGA in some circumstances.

This makes sense, really, as until recently there were no 16:9 computer monitors…they were 16:10.

16:9 (1280x720 and 1920x1080 is a television thing, not a computer thing.

Anyway, the best way to enable ALL the possible resolutions over VGA is to get a VGA EDID Emulator from Hall Research. These adapters go inline and allow the Mac to "see" more resolutions than just going direct will offer.

At ~$70/ea. they aren't cheap. But that's the cost of projection these days.

Let us know if re-encoding makes a difference.

I think Ra byn is right - I may have to replace the audio interface.  unfortunately, working for a university, that's not a simple thing to do (no budget for something new, and not allowed to ebay...)  I don't want to get into the politics of it - it's just reality here...  My boss will find money for something new eventually if there's no other choice

I have an EDID emulator, and I'm well versed in the projector resolution games...  I actually was outputting 1280 by 800 even though the video is 720p with the projector set to not scale (it's native res is actually 1366x800)

The thing is that there's more going on here that I'd love to understand.

If I select the internal audio out in system prefs then the video plays fine in Quicktime X.  If I only have audio routed to the internal out in qlab, I get the same as when the audio is routed to the Tascam.  In fact the I need to disconnect the Tascam's USB and reboot the Mac before Qlab will play the video correctly (using the internal audio out.)

The whole thing is kind of troubling to me, that having an audio interface connected, even if it's unused, would cause this problem.

Of course, I'd also like to figure out how to make it work, short of replacing the audio interface...

Thanks!

Andy

Does the video have an audio channel in it? If so, is it at a sample/bit rate that is native to the Tascam USB? Also if so, try stripping out the audio track and play the video only version. Same problem?

Day before yesterday I was helping a local hs get ready for SOM. I noticed that their Galaxy Audio Any Spot mics were showing up on as many as 4 channels when turn on separately. The school owns 13 and the units can be tuned to 1 of 16 frequencies. I called Galaxy to ask about frequency spacing and IMD. The frequencies are roughly 1.5mhz apart with no concern for IMD. Galaxy also stated that they don't recommend using more than 4 units in a given band even though there is no mention of this on the box or in the manual. I told the tech teacher the good news and she called the admin office. 15 minutes later with an audience in route I rented a 32 channel sennheiser RF rack from a friend and $1200 later the show opened on time and just worked.

Point being, part of our job is to make it clear to the bean counters that the show they hope to make a profit on will suffer if the money isn't spent.

Being dramatic is part of our job at times:)

Andy -

Do you have the Mountain Lion compatible driver, as well as the firmware update for the 1641?

This seems similar to the problems that showed up with incompatible MIDI drivers keeping QLab from launching, which showed up with Lion.
