Hi all at Qlab

Just wondered if its ok to play MP3 files through qlab, or is it best to stick to one format such as wav/aiff,
i have a job coming up and i know they're going to supply me with mp3s.

Kind Regards

James C.

Hi James

Qlab is capable of playing back mP3's but because its a compressed format qlab needs to uncompress the file before playback so it takes a bit of extra processing power. I personally stick to WAV files and have never had an audio issue.
I do remember that there was an issue with having longer mp3 files, perhaps dropping samples but I can't remember the exact issue.

Cheers

Geoff

The best rule is just to avoid MP3s when using Qlab. There is a limitation of file length that causes many users who don't know about it head aches. There is a warning now in Qlab (not sure what because I've never seen it) but to be safe, WAV or AIFF is your best bet.

There's a free (mac) batch converter called xACT out there that does a great, rapid conversion.  Takes all of 2 minutes to install, and converts at whatever quality, to and from whatever format you want.

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14246/xact

I'm sure there are others, but I can speak highly of this one...

I use XLD, fast, quick and simple. I have it on my dock so I can drag files to it and it converts them to wav inplace.

Thanks

there is also a similar audio conversion utility called Max, although the current stable release is quite old it's been very stable in my experience:

As far as I can tell Stephen Booth has given up on Free software, both
his recent efforts have been released as commercial software via
http://www.feisty-dog.com/ and he hasn't updated his Free software for ages.

In any case I gave up on Max and replaced it with the excellent XLD

http://tmkk.undo.jp/xld/index_e.html

Which despite its name also serves as a cross coder and is regularly
updated.
