Hey everybody,

Just a couple of questions:

1. I need to control a lighting program on a pc (Compu Live) from QLab--preferably from midi. But, I do not have a midi interface for the pc and none of the local stores have them and I do not have time to order one. I have also looked at midi over the internet, but all the ones for windows are too expensive. Does any one know of a way, for cheep, or even better, free?

2.I need to fade some music from the main L/R speakers to a radio on stage, but my fade has a gap in it. The L/R will fade down, then the radio will fade up a few seconds tater with a 2-4 second gap between. My quick fix is to have the radio on the whole time and just fade out the L/R. But i would like to know why it is doing this.

Hey Bennett,

1. the most reliable midi over ethernet software for mac is to my knowledge ipMIDI - http://nerds.de/en/ipmidi.html. The OS X client is for free and the windows one is 80$ for 3 computers. That should not be to expensive if you are looking for a reliable solution.

Most PCI sound cards can receive MIDI over the game port connector - mostly the old realtek ones. I bet a local geek has tons of them laying around. Here is the connection diagram- http://web.singnet.com.sg/~lau0cy/pc_midi.gif You can skip the optocoupler on your own responsibility.

2. Please describe the situation more clearly, how long is your fade. What is your link between FOH (main L/R) and radio? I suppose you a separate Qlab output for each. Than I suggest you have a look at the mailing list archive. We have discussed the fades in detail few weeks ago.

Modify your fade curve so that it will be like a half of the inverse parabola. Click on the fade curve and drag the point to the up right corner for the fade up and fade down.

Best regards,
Luka Mustafa

Do you have any "real" music stores in your area? The M audio Uno is
probably the most available 1 port MIDI I/O.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Uno/

If you're in the states, you can order one from Sweetwater Music & they
can ship it out overnight if it has to be done that way. $40 plus shipping

MIDI over IP is built into the Mac OS. Just go to the Audio/Midi app and select Network or add a Network device if it is not there. That may solve half the problem anyway.

I wouldn't call it a "real" music store, but even the local Guitar Center has these things. $30 or so. Watch out, as it has integrated MIDI cables- MALE pins, not a female jack...
