Sorry to revive a year old thread - but I'm geting exactly the same
error messages now.
I used Migration Assistant to move everything on my laptop (including
qlab) to another mac book pro while mine is in the shop - the licence
now shows as not authorized and when I try to authorize it or delete
it I get the "Error Saving Activation" message.

It won't let me use a rental licence because there is "already a license there"

I need to run a show THIS AFTERNOON and I'm kind of desperate to get it working.

Any ideas??

Please call my cell 603-767-8510 if you think you have a solution.

Thanks!

Andy

Subject: problem with rental licensing in Snow Leopard
To: QLab

Hi Chris,

I checked my licenses and are correct, and running ok on other Macbook
with OSX 10.5.8

All are .QLab2License files. All have the Q icon. I don't have Qlab 1
installed.

The problem comes with no erasing last rentallicenseused. I get this
message.

"Errorsaving activation
Qlab was unable to save activation changes. Your activation data will
not be retained on the next launch. Plese run Qlab under a user with
administrative privileges to correct this."

Everytime i open Qlab theLicensealready expired is loaded and i have
to force the delete.

Then i load the new rentallicense, and i get this message:

"Errorimportinglicensefile
QLab was unable to save the information from yourlicensefile. Please
run QLab under a user with administrative privileges to correct this,
or contact supp...@figure53.com for assistance"

I'm under an administrator account (i have no other).

I updated to 2.2.2 and still got the issue.

Backup your license file and your qlab session files

Go to Mac hd, Users, <your user name>, Library, Application support.

Delete the Qlab Folder and empty trash

delete the qlab app from applications

download a fresh copy

Try again

Not sure if this will work or not but is sounds like you don't have write access in the folder the license is being authenticated in.

Maybe someone else with more knowledge of qlab would be able to advise if there is another folder where qlab stores deeper licensing files?

Give that a try anyway.

Hi Andy,

This came in while I was on a plane, but I see that Luckydave responded to you off list since you also wrote in to support@figure53.

For the benefit of those following along at home, the issue here is one we've recently figured out, which is that when you use Migration Assistant to move to a new computer, it places incorrect ownership permissions on the license authorization database file, and you no longer have permission to modify or delete it.

We have a tool that can fix this for you, which is what Luckydave sent to Andy, and in a future release I'll add the necessary code to QLab to allow it to fix things without needing a separate utility.

Sorry for the trouble Andy, and I hope things went/are going smoothly.

Cheers from Louisville,

Chris

For the benefit of the list and to prevent people trying things
unnecessarily the above procedure will not have any effect on the QLab
license.

I'm afraid at least part of the way licensing has to work to be robust
enough for production use is security through obscurity which is why
Chris has a tool to fix the license problem rather than describing how
to do it manually.

(Who has nothing to do with figure53 but was involved in knocking bugs
out of the licensing mechanism during the beta period)

I've got the same issue.  I use Time Machine to clone 20 Macs.  Added license key files to /Users/Shared/Figure53 before making the Time Machine image.  Now when I run QLab on any of the computers, I get this error, but when I check the licenses, the current and future licenses do show up.  So, not sure why this is happening at all.  Maybe the tool from LuckyDave will help me too, but can't see where to get it.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Chris,

I came across the solution by accident.  Turns out the quick solution is to do the following:

  1. Quit QLab
  2. Delete /Users/Shared/Figure53/ folder
  3. Empty Trash
  4. Open QLab
And all my licenses stayed intact. I'm not sure if that is because I had the license keys in that folder the first time I ran QLab.  The folder doesn't have the keys
from earlier, but a new license file, created at step 4.

I'm posting this solution here in case it will help others.

Have a great day.

DaddyFixIt. :)
