Is there a clever way of doing this?

Hello hivemind,

I am looking to control the motu using Qlab preferably  osc.  The Motu 828pre-es would have to be connected to a mac and a pc somehow.  The control and triggering (mic switching) is going to happen though qlab on a mac but the interface audio will be going to a pc that is broadcasting audio and video signal.  Any elegant solutions for this?

(I don't have a Motu yet, but was researching 8 mics, mixing, fx and it seems like the 828pre-es is a good solution)

I know at least at one time the protocol that MOTU used from their control app to the actual device was very weird and not easy to reverse engineer, but that was quite a few years ago.

You can control most parameters of the MOTU AVB interfaces with OSC.
MOTU has a reference on this:

https://cdn-data.motu.com/downloads/audio/AVB/docs/OSC%20Quick%20Reference.pdf

I've only done a few basic things with this a while back, but it did
work for me. My vague memory is that the OSC commands only travel via
ethernet (you can use thunderbolt or USB for audio), and that the
tricky part is IP addressing - might be best to put it on a network
with DHCP server and tell the server to always give the MOTU the same
IP address, based on it's MAC address. I don't believe you can set the
MOTU to a fixed IP, but I'd be happy to be wrong about that!

Hi Brendan! Fun fact re fixed IP's:

In the MOTU AVB settings, you can change the name of each individual interface, and that name actually then becomes the MOTU's hostname, which can be used instead of an IP address.

So if I change the name of my MOTU 16a to "Tech Table", I can then open up Qlab's settings and set the Network Cue Destination IP address to "tech-table.local"  and any OSC cues patched in, go to the correct destination.

& to answer OP's question, this would work with the 828 Pre-ES.

Thank you.
Is the Motu 828pre-es considered an AVB interface? Sorry for the noob question. Or there is an additional device I have to buy to be able to control the interface?

PS Is this an interface you recommend where I would like the processing to be done outside the computer (compression, gate, eq)

it is- all the MOTU interfaces with an ethernet port on the back are part of their AVB line.
