Hi, I have a MacBook Air M2, and I’m running video out using Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

I’ve heard mixed things on this adapter, from the most reliable and unreliable.

Personally, after using it on various TVs I’ve had it fail a few times (Unplugging and replugging fixes it temporarily)

Is there something more reliable? The MacBook usually runs off battery as there are only 2 ports.

I've been using these for years on my Macbook Pro (older intel machine) and more recently on an iMac M1.  I haven't had an issue with them.  I even run both the HDMI port and USB port (to the sound board) simultaneously on the same adaptor sometimes and haven't had an issue.  Probably shouldn't do that, but sometimes there just aren't enough ports to do what I need to.  I haven't had in issue with it yet.  I am running HD video, but not 4K.

I’ve found products from OWC (https://eshop.macsales.com/) to be well built and reliable. I’ve used this adapter paired with a Mac Mini M1, and although I haven’t done extensive testing, it’s worked well so far.

I like it because it’s also got gigabit ethernet, pass-through power, and HDMI 4k @60Hz. They sell a similar adapter for slightly cheaper that doesn’t have the ethernet port, and sends HDMI at 30Hz.

Not sure I’d recommend running your computer off battery power, but both this adapter and the Apple one have a USB-C port for power, so either adapter can be used without sacrificing the second port on your computer.

Best of luck
Mark

I've had great luck in the corporate AV space with HDMI adapters by Anker.

Shame that Apple charges so much for a product that doesn't knock it out of the park.

thanks, why would you not recommend battery power? Is there not enough power for the HDMI signal?

The USB clicker I use is laggy too, didn't have that problem with the Intel Macbook. Not sure if that's because that one had USB-A instead of having to use a USB-C converter
