Looking for a way to interleave multichannel files into a single file to play in Qlab.

Unfortunately, SoundFileMerger is 32 bit and no longer works for this process.

I have tried the program Deleave/Interleave, but I find it to be not the best, so looking for a better option.  Guess that I am spoiled after using SFM for so long.

I have been told that you can do this in Audacity, Reaper and Logic  Could someone elaborate on the process, especially in Reaper, my DAW of choice.

I did do this in Audacity a long time ago but can't seem to figure it out now and nobody on that Forum really understood what I was trying to do.

thx

Try Sound devices Wave Agent, but read the Catalina/Big Sur installation instructions carefully.

HI Charles,

There’s an Intel-64bit version, called „1.3" of De-Interleaver here:

muellmusik released this on 21 Dec 2017.

Running even on Big Sur, but is cleaerly outdated, GUI-wise.

All input files have to be on the same sample-rate.

Click „Interleve“ to add the files from one location.
Long paths will be difficult, because they get truncated at some point of your screen.
And: the paths will be displayed as URIs, so a „ " will show as „%20".

Drag’n’Drop to sort them accordingly.

Click „Start“ to get to the Output selection including selection of wav, aif or caf.

So this:

Will get me that:

Use the „Help“-menu in the app to get more help.

With kindest regards…

Hey Charles,
This is very possible in REAPER!

Here's how I do it. This way is easy when you get into the habit of it! There's another way to do it that eliminates the multichannel bus and makes each of your individual track an n-channel track, and you can route audio to the various channels through the FX rack, but I think this way below is the most intuitive.

1) Import your audio files into REAPER on separate tracks

2) Create a new track that will be your multichannel bus

3) Route each track to your multichannel bus, and remove the individual tracks from the master send. The only track that should be going to the master send is your multichannel bus. (Using the Routing Matrix makes this even quicker).

4) Open the multichannel bus routing and for each receive, choose a different set of channels to receive audio onto from your individual tracks, as in the attached screenshot.

5) Open routing for your master track and change the number of track channels to suit your application

6) Render the audio, using the WAV format, and type your desired channel count in the "channels" field.

In short, audio tracks -> multichannel bus -> main output. The multichannel bus, master track, and the render window all must reflect the channel count you are trying to achieve.

Let me know if you have questions!
Dan

Just checked and Sound Devices Wave Agent is still fully functional with the newest operating systems. To Install follow these instructions.

It's really quick, less than 10 secs to import files and make a 16ch interleaved wav

If your mono files are named stemName_instrumentName.wav then the batch mode will automatically combine them.

Otherwise, use the Manual Mode and select the  track order and the name for the interleaved file.

Thanks for all of the help on this.  It's much appreciated.  It is great to have some options to fall back on for this process.

Hi Charles,
Audacity is the easiest way of doing this.
In Preferences go to Import/Export and click Use Advanced Mixing Options, the rest becomes obvious when you export.
Cheers,
Ivan

Hey all,

Sorry to re-open this thread 2.5 years later, but I recently upgraded to Catalina, and therefore lost access to Sound Files Merger, which was just so easy. I know how to make multi-channel files in Reaper, but am looking for something as easy as SFM if possible. I was unable to instal Wave Agent for some reason. When I try to open the .dmg file, nothing happens. Please let me know if you have advice on this or another solution.

I wrote this cookbook chapter in response to basically this exact predicament…
