Is there an official way to program video without actually having an external monitor plugged in?

I thought maybe if I get a HDMI dummy plug then I could just use the monitor popup off to the side?

In QLab 5 you can create an NDI output the same size as your missing display and then use NDI monitor to Simulate the display. When you connect your Mac to the real display you just change the patch in settings/video/output routing from NDI to your actual projector/display

One way is to use an audition window, which will display the video in a monitor window rather than send it to the usual output:

While auditioning is the simplest and best solution for displays fed from 1 surface(Qlab4)/stage (QLab5), for more complex mapping/PIP/compositing set ups which use multiple stages on 1 display,  the output using audition, and an NDI or similar solution will be vastly different.

which looks like this on a display, or NDI monitor

Will look like this in Audition

Although there are doubtless many reasons why this would be difficult, a button to monitor on each output route, might be a useful addition.

Thank you, i'm trying out NDI Monitor.

But also I found some success using my ipad plugged in via usb, with Duet app creating a screen extension. I thought my ipad would be too old to handle this but it seems fine.

Yes, but I would say using an iPad probably counts as using an external monitor!

I use a Cocopar USB-C Portable Monitor - 15.6 Inch 1080P  which just slips in my bag with my laptop and connects with a single cable for power and video.
