I am trying to add a fire video effect over an image. I have several versions of the video loop, including a mask version and one with a chroma key background. Is there any way to add the video overlay using chroma masking?
I am aware I can just create the video with fire as a separate movie, and then fade advance. This is fine as a workaround, but I am stroll wondering of we can do the other.
Thanks.

You could take your chromakey or masked footage and render this to a video with transparency using ProRes 4444 codec

Why not key out the background in post and use a codec with Alpha?

If I understand the replies, you are both suggesting I create the overlay outside of Qlab. I know I can do this in FCPX, and then drop in the adjusted video. But If I have a fire effect, and want to play it over ANY video in Qlab (using its alpha channel), is there anyway that I can do this? Maybe I just don't understand what you mean by "In post"
Thanks.

In the video editor of your choice make a video with transparency. ProRes 4444 codec. Place that final rendered video in QLab. Make sure it is on layer "Top" then play the other video on a layer other than Top. Fire effect will play above the other video.
