Hi Alex.

It sounds like you have mirroring turned on for your displays. Go to the Arrangement tab of the Displays pane of System Preferences and turn off mirroring, and you'll be able to address each screen independently. You'll need to quit and restart QLab once you've done this, so the correct settings are in place when it launches.

That helped, but it's still not accomplishing what I want, which is to see the video frozen on the first frame, then roll on my cue.  Is that possible in this software?

No. That would be the video equivaent of a vamp/devamp cue. But you can make two cues, one which loops the first frame of video and a second which plays the media.

Or just a video cue that autocontinues into an immediate pause cue. Then a second play cue to unpause it.

Well, you could start the cue and pause it immediately. Might be a bit clunky but worth a try:

VIDEO CUE - Target Video File - Autocontinue
PAUSE CUE - Target Video Cue
START CUE - Target Video Cue

Hitting GO on the Start cue will continue playing the video. Your Mileage May Vary :-)

that is doable.  so firing it would basically load it, autocontinue to a pause and then a second hit goes to the start.

sounds logical enough.  could you maybe clarify the difference between target video file and target video cue?

unfortunately, I don't have the VTR in front of me, but I will tomorrow with plenty of time to try.  i'm old-school, if I have to put 3-second pre-rolls on them and pretend like they're UMatic tapes, I will :)

A little confusing, yes. Build your first cue by dragging the video file into QLab. That builds a Video Cue that is Targeted to that video file. To set up the Pause cue, you can drag it from the Toolbox on the left. Then you have to target it by dragging the Video Cue on top of the Pause Cue. Same thing for the Start cue.

That help?

the "video file" is the actual one & only "video cue"
the rest all control that initial "video cue".

The first column of Mike P's suggestion is the "type" of Qlab cue. The
second part is the target & the last is where you cause the "magic" with
the auto continue checked.

Clear?

But it only works if the video file has the autocontinue on it?  if so, that just automatically advances the playlist without the clip needing to play to completion?

ra byn & Mike -- think I got it.  Love the ability to "rent" a pro license, good way for these guys to do business.

We'll be back at it tomorrow, thanks for the assistance.

You need to set Autocontinue on the Video CUE so it immediately executes the Pause cue.  Then QLab will load the Start cue as the next in sequence and wait for you to execute it.

The Video FILE is only present as the Target of the video cue so it knows what content to play.

It all looks like this:

North Travel 2.mov is the Video File.

And I'll just add, that if you want to see a few frames of video before
you pause, just adjust the post wait time for the first cue Mike used in
the example & then you have complete control over how much video rolls
before you pause.

In theory, if you've got 3 secs of black at the front of each cue & want
to let it play out until you see the first frame of actual video, you
could adjust the post wait time of the first cue to 3:XX & then you would
see whatever you're needing to see to know it's all going to work.

Meaning that you aren't stuck with a post wait time of 0:00.

Also, if you aren't on to this already, make sure that once you've faded
video out (if you are doing it in Qlab) that you are stopping the video.
Some people have performance issues that turn out to be piled up video
cues that aren't needed but are still playing in the background. I believe
there is an option in the video animation cue to stop video at the end of
a fade.

All clips will be cut with 1.5 seconds of silent pre-roll (no black) and pad out for at least 3 seconds.  TD will handle transitions in and out on my cues.  I'll work with it tomorrow to make it roll true and make sure that it doesn't flash, although if that happens in the pre-roll that's not a big deal.

I'm used to working with EVS and Quantel systems, so I'm quite glad that this functionality is available in QLab.
