Hi all,

So have finally been able to purchase Qlab for the theatre company
that i work for and so far it works well. What i am interested to know
is whether there is anyway to link two computers running the same show
file i.e. a slave and a master? Screen sharing through leopard works
well for the rehearsals but is there something more stable?

Cheers

Jack

Hi Jack,

Welcome to the list! The most common way to do this is using MIDI to
connect the two machines. I'd suggest taking a search through the
mailing list archives because it has been discussed quite a bit:

http://lists.figure53.com/pipermail/qlab-figure53.com/

http://groups.google.com/group/qlab

For example, here's the start of a thread from a few days ago:

Best,
Chris

Yeah.

Two computers running the same show that have nothing to do with each other.

To do this you need:

External midi trigger option. I use the JLC MCS2 Midi device which allow
for PLAY, STOP, PAUSE, UNPAUSE, FF, RR, RESET ALL, etc...

You need to split the midi trigger signal before it goes into the macs.

For this use a Midi Solutions Thru $40

You also need a Midi Solutions Power Adapter $50 since the JLC doesn't
provide power on it's midi out.

Take the signal off the THRU & go to each Mac's I/O (needs midi of course).
Then you need to set up remote parameters in preferences to do what you
want it to do. I can provide an example if you need one.

In the analog domain, you'll need to double your Qlab console inputs so
both Macs are patched at the same time. If possible, set up a mute group
so you can easily switch between the two systems. If mute groups aren't an
option, you will have to manually switch over.

In my case, we spent the $1100 for the Radial Engineering SW8 8 channel
auto switch so if our A system dies, the B system takes over seamlessly.

It's also a matter of one push button to switch over manually.

Whirlwind also makes an autoswitch but the nice thing about the SW8 is it
has iso transformers on the XLR outputs. It also has a direct DB25 output
option so you can iso split to two different consoles.

If you have more questions, write back.
