I thought we had discussed this in the past, but I can't find it...

I'm looking for a script that would let me
start with a series of video cues holding still images and it would:
set all their capacities to 0 and autocontinue on
then add 3 fade cues to fade the new image up and the old image down and stop the one that faded down.

Does something like this exist?

Thanks!

Andy

You can easily adapt this to do that
http://qlabcookbook.com/2012/01/04/subtitles/

Just use the second and third scripts and change any references to "titles" to "video"

I thought I had posted a video version, but perhaps I did it off list for someone

I'll post the workspace when I'm back in the studio later

Actually I think the thread that you were remembering was Jeremy Lee's problem  automating a cue list from EXIF data, which was another more complex variation of a self generating cuelist.

Anyway here is the simple image version which should do what you want.

Andy, unless I'm missing something which is totally possible I think your transitions have more steps than you need . You can crossfsde from one image to another with a single fade cue, assuming the second image is started on a layer under he first. Just auto continue the new image to a fade cue that fades out and stops the old.

Unless your images are different sizes , which might preclude you from starting one beneath another one. But you could easily batch import and resize them all centered on a black background using, say, InDesign, and avoid that problem.

That assumes the current cue is at 100 percent before your crossfade cue, that it doesn't have any transparency, is full screen,  and it isn't a title cue.  Although I usually use the bottom layer method you describe, it is less versatile and does require the current image to be cleared before you jump somewhere else in the cuelist which can confuse some operators (although it does stop them leaving lots of images live behind the current one).

If you are auto generating a cue  list then the extra step isn't really an issue. And it gives you an uptime and a downtime with the option to delay one or the other, which some people will prefer to messing around with curves, particularly if they are used to lighting boards.

The reason I don't do that is sometimes the images are not the same size, so the new image popping in may be seen around the edges.

In QLab 4 you can set up a template cue with the option fade and stop other cues ticked, then drag and drop any number of images into your workspace. Instant slideshow.
