I wanted to pass something along first, on the off chance that this is already easily possible, so I can learn about it.  And second, to share a neat implementation being used by another piece of Mac OS X software to do something that (I don't think) is easily doable with Qlab yet.

The software is Renewed Vision's ProPresenter 4, and the feature is built in integration for the Matrox DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go display devices.  Basically, the software treats each as 2 or 3 virtual outputs, stitching them together in software to allow them to be sent to the Matrox.  This allows for designers to create shows using 3 discrete displays in the interface, while all the Matrox stitching and slicing happens behind the scenes.

Renewed Vision describes the feature like so:

ProPresenter has always been able to work with the TripleHead2Go, but because the computer only thought it was connected to one wide display, ProPresenter would only display text as if it was displaying to an ultra-wide display. With the Advanced module, however, ProPresenter can now project videos and lyrics independently on each of the TripleHead2Go's outputs*. Lyrics can be placed on any or all of the screens, and background videos can be spanned or displayed individually on each display.

The interface is simply a dropdown to select either the TripleHead or DualHead and a checkbox to enable or disable the feature. Very simple, but it seems like a powerful addition.

Neat. That's a nice idea.

I think this would be a great feature in general - to be able to tell
Qlab to either divide a physical output in to multiple virtual
outputs...
Of course I'd also love to be able to create a single virtual output
that goes to a predefined set of physical outputs and also do edge
blending.... but that's probably a more difficult thing to
implement...

Good point. This probably could be approached in a way that would allow for the special case of Matrox devices, but would be more general.
