QLab > Mackie DL32R setup query

Hi

We’ve just bought a new Mackie DL32R wireless mixer to use in conjunction with QLab and run sound for theatrical productions. Consequently I need to go into the Mackie via USB and send the signal out to multiple outputs (typically 16 speakers) with individual control on each.

I’ve managed to get the Mackie working like an external soundcard but don’t seem to have control on the faders in the Master Fader app. So I can’t add real time effects or anything else interesting yet. It’s probably something I’ve done wrong in the patch but I’m not sure what.

Can anyone help? Is there a step by step guide available anywhere for QLab > Mackie DL32R?

Hello,

I just got our DL32R in last week, though I’m using it as a big Dante I/O device.  I did have to get it set up and running from the Master Fader app, which as far as I can tell is iOS only.  So, you’ll need an iPad (not sure about iPhones) to set it up.  I think it supports MIDI in some way, so you should be able to have QLab send MIDI to it to control.  However, that’s from memory, and it may not support MIDI.  I didn’t care for my application, so I haven’t looked into it.

I am sure you need to set it all up from the app on an iPad, though.  The USB connection is just to use it as a sound card, won’t support any control.  It may be necessary for MIDI, though.  Hopefully someone who has used it for it’s intended purpose can speak to it’s control abilities more.

My recollection from using the console is that it has no control functions other than what the Master Fader iOS app provides, which is essentially a virtual desk (channel faders, EQ, routing, etc). Here is a product review from Electronic Musician, the opening paragraph of which pretty much sets the tone:

"Mackie’s DL32R digital mixer is at once exciting and scary. Exciting, because of the huge feature set, quality of sound, and routing and control capabilities it brings to a very reasonable price point. Scary, because the only way to control it is by using an iPad. There are no surface controls, no MIDI-speak, not even an application to run it via computer. It’s iPad or nuthin.’" http://www.emusician.com/gear/1332/review-mackie-dl32r/51942 Digging through the DL32R's user manual also reveals nothing about MIDI-enabled functions.

There’s no network issue, just limited functionality of the virtual mixer in the Master Fader app. Everything seems to be locked in pre-fade (faders do nothing) and I can’t route FX. I can see a signal coming into each channeI and I do seem to have control of the dynamics on each one (gate & compressor) although I’m not overly impressed by them.

I assume I’m missing some critical (and probably obvious) stage in the patch on the Master Fader app …
