Introducing QLab 5

Hello friends

After almost exactly three years of hard work, Figure 53 is very pleased to present QLab 5, which you can download here:

The new features are too many to list in a post like this, but I’ll hit a few highlights:

• QLab Collaboration allows multiple people using multiple Macs to simultaneously view, edit, and use a single workspace across a local network.
• Optional autosave and snapshot tools make it easy to prevent accidental data loss.
• A file relinking tool makes it easy to reconnect media files with cues that can’t find them.
• A Playlist mode for Group cues makes it easy to create walk-in music, slideshows, lighting chases, or any other sequential set of events.
• Auditioning has been completely rethought with per-type audition behavior, per-cue auditioning, and more.
• Cart grids are more flexible, and cart cues show more information.
• A new contextual menu gives you easy access to common actions and direct access to in-line help and links to the manual.
• The Warnings tab of the Workspace Status window has been rebuilt to give you much more information about issues in your workspace and tools to help fix them.
• A completely new patch system lets you create and manage audio input, audio output, network, and MIDI patches with dramatically improved power and flexibility.
• Audio and Video cues can have zero-count slices, letting you skip a section of the target media file with sample-accurate precision.
• AudioUnit effect meters now work everywhere.
• The all-new Metal video rendering engine gives you improved performance, multiple video effects per cue, blend modes per cue, increased power and flexibility for video output setup, and did we mention improved performance?
• NDI input and output.
• An Audition tab in the Light Dashboard lets you preview Light cues before showing the world.
• QLab 5 ships with support for about 1400 lighting fixtures from over 60 manufacturers.
• QLab 5 can lock to and chase timecode, with optional freewheeling and configurable behavior if incoming timecode is lost.
• New Network cue templates give you direct access to the OSC library of over a dozen popular OSC-controllable programs and devices, like the ETC EOS family, the Meyer GALAXY, the d&b Soundscape, and Creative Connors’ Spikemark 5.
• Multiple passcodes per workspace and configurable network ports give you increased control over network access to your workspace.
• And much more!

QLab 5 is a paid upgrade from QLab 4. If you bought a QLab 4 license on or after November 1, 2021, you can trade it in for its full value. If you bought it before that, it’s still worth a very hefty discount.

Very interested in NDI support for projectors. Knowing almost nothing about NDI (learning fast) will I need to buy a license from Newtek? Do the receivers need a licence or does it cover everything once I have a license?

Hi Jason

Send NDI from QLab will require a QLab video license, but as far as we’re aware that’s all that you need to get NDI out of the Mac.

Whether your projector requires anything additional is a question for the projector manufacturer.

I may have found a bug - can’t create text cues!

It works in a new workspace, but in an old one, imported from v4 - the text button doesn’t add a ce when clicked, and dragging it just drags the icon...

Excited about the new video tools though!

Hi really looking forward to using v5, with the new licensing of just 2 macs, how does the licence work if 2 macs are os11 & 12, (main - os10.15 (imac), backup os11 (identical imac but a few months difference - no option for os upgrades on main at this moment in time) & edit - (macbook os12)) what happens with qlab 4 if i upgraded to v5, would i need another fresh licence for the main imac running qlab 4.7?

Hi there

If it were me, I would wait to upgrade the license until all my Macs could run macOS 11 or newer. As you noted, the license policy is different in QLab 5: you get two activations, not three. In exchange, we’ve removed restrictions about how those two activations can be used, and we’ve built the Collaboration features to allow a single unlicensed Mac to have full collaboration access.

If all three of your Macs were able to run macOS 11 or newer, you’d be able to upgrade to v5 and keep using all three in a manner very similar to how you’re using them now.

Since your main Mac is stuck at macOS 10.15, though, my recommendation is to wait to upgrade your license.

I just want to make sure it's totally clear: upgrading a license to v5 means that the v4 license will be deleted and replaced with a v5 license, which indeed means going down from three activations to two activations. If you upgrade your license but must keep using v4, you'll only be able to use your upgraded license on two Macs at a time, not three.

We think you get a lot of good stuff in exchange for this, but we want to make sure it's clear and that everyone understands the change.

Thanks for all the hard work on Qlab 5.  Continuing on the licensing question…

If I have Qlab 5 on my system, can I use one of those activations to keep a Qlab 4 license active?  One of the two v5 to activate 1 instance of v5 and 1 instance  keeping a v4 license active?  The reason I ask is many of the theaters I deal with are slower on upgrading and have Qlab 4.  If I create a show in v5 can v 4 open it?  Can it be exported in v4 format if not?

Hi Todd!

If you activate a v5 license on a computer, that computer will now work for both v4.7 and v5. 

Only one activation is required for the computer, and both versions will “see” the activation and enabled the associated features. Thus, you can launch either one and work in both.

If you create a show in v5, you can only open it in v5; it can not be exported or transferred to v4.
