The change info for qlab 5 states that playlists can be auto or manual advance.  This will be great for preshow lists and videos.  I tried a set of jpg images and I could put a time on each and it made for a nice slideshow.  I cannot figure out how to manual advance a playlist.  With a zero time duration a photo will not advance and will persist on screen.  As soon as I put a duration in the cue the autofollow flag appears.  I would have suspected that manual advance was not possible if I had not read it in the new features info.

Thanks

We can definitely do a better job explaining this…

To manually advance a Playlist Group cue:

  1. Select the Group and look in the Triggers tab of the inspector
  2. On the right side, set “If running, a second trigger…” to “plays next”

You can then repeatedly start the Playlist Group cue (e.g. by selecting it and hitting GO or by using Start cues or hotkey triggers, etc.) to advance.

I haven't worked with the if running property much so I don't think about it.   I was able to get it work pretty clean using the hotkey.  Only catch is I have to switch from spacebar to the correct hot key for the list I'm at.

I tried setting up a goto after the group and that worked ok when I would go twice per image.  I couldn't get it to auto follow the group to auto execute the goto cue.  It ended up at the subsequent cue.  Second problem was getting stuck at the bottom of the group.  I tried another goto there (speghetti code anyone) but it wasn't jumping the way I wanted.

Ideally, I could configure it to just go through the entire playlist then advance to the next cue out of the group.  Even with the way it works now its a great improvement over the 3 cues per image (fade in/cue/fade out) that I've had before.  For now the hot key seems to be best practice but I'm open to improvements.

Thanks

Hello Matt

That’s sort of part of the point… if you wanted to keep using the space bar, you could use a Start-first-and-enter Group and set each cue inside that group to fade and stop peers.

The idea behind a manually advancing Playlist Group is to give you control of the Group that’s outside the regular GO-button flow of your performance.

Sam,

I happen to be in a tech now where the video designer is trying to use a playlist group for a JPG slide show. Am I correct in saying there’s no way to specify still image duration on an image for the playlist group to interpret?

If you want an automated slide show you set the duration value of a still image in a playlist or all using bulk edit.  Automated progressions such as preshow music and slideshows seem well suited to this.

I was trying to use playlist as a manual slide show but it turns out I could have done this in V4 and didn't even realize I could using the fade and stop peers setting in a group.

Hi Anthony,

Here is how to use a playlist for a still image slide show:

- Put all the still images in a playlist group
- Select all of them
- In the “Basic” tab of the inspector, enter the duration you want for each image

You can also press “d” when they are selected as a shortcut to edit the duration.

Cheers,
Chris

That’s what I had the video designer do but it resulted in a crash each time. I had him report it through the workspace. It looks like the images are not displaying the duration time specified.

Thanks so much for the reply!

Oh, good to know!  I tested it on my end to be sure, and the crash is not expected.

As you might imagine, we’ve had a lot of feedback reports since launch so I don’t know if I can go find his specific one without something to search for, but if it continues to crash after updating to 5.0.1 please do write in so we can get it fixed for you.

Best,
C

Yes definitely! I so appreciate all the work being put into this. We are running 5.0.1 so I’ll make sure it’s reported. Otherwise, we are happily running in tech right now with designers happily using the new collaboration features. Truly game changing!

Correction — I just found the set of reports you sent in, thank you!

I believe we may have successfully fixed this issue this morning, and I’ll be replying to the feedback report with a beta build that hopefully fixes it for you. (And if not that will give us more info.)

Best,
C

Got the beta from the link you sent the video designer.  Thanks so much!

The group is working perfectly now. Only one issue left with it. I can’t set the duration time from a remote instance. It adds the follow arrows to the still images but doesn’t put in the duration time. Doing all of this in the primary machine works great but though.
