Been working in 2.3, and now that the video bug appears to be in the process of going away, would like to move to 3.  Having trouble getting the program to recognize multiple audio tracks imbedded in my ProRes files.  Currently working with 4 pairs, imbedded as discrete 0-7.  All the workspace will show is input one and two.  If I route the QT directly to my MOTU, all the tracks show up.  This is not an issue in 2.3. I'm assuming operator error, and could use some advise.

No reason why this shouldn't work

First check the format of you file using QT Player Info

Mine shows 8 discrete channels.

And here is that file playing in Qlab

One thing to check is that all the inputs have level. (Left Hand Column). QLab will present the correct number of channels when a cue is dragged in but the input levels will be as in your default setting in settings/audio.

Also check which license you are running. If you only have a video license, I think your audio may be restricted to the free (i.e 2) channels of audio per file.

Actually, there is a reason this isn’t working; it’s the distinction between channels and tracks in video files. QLab supports multiple channels of audio, but only one audio track.

That is to say, Mic’s example, which works, has a single audio track that contains multiple channels. Mike’s file has multiple audio tracks, which will not work. His first track is stereo, which is why the first two channels are showing up in QLab.

Here’s a quick guide, courtesy of Sam, for how to do this conversion in FCP:

  1. Set your Final Cut Pro project to surround audio.
  2. Outside of FCP, create an AIFF or WAV file with six tracks.
You can do this quickly from individual files using SoundFiles Merger: http://www.e—j.com/index.php/soundfilesmerger/
  3. Drop that audio into FCP, where it will appear as one track with six mono channels.
  4. When it’s time to export, use “Send to Compressor…”
  5. In Compressor, use the ProRes 422 export setting and then go over to the column on the right side. Under Audio/Audio Properties, set Channel layout to 5.1
  6. Export.
  7. You will now have a movie file with six channels in a single audio track.

Another QLab user has posted similar directions for Premiere, which you can find at:

Ah, I was confused by the original post saying embedded as discreet 0-7, when it was in fact embedded as 4 separate stereo tracks.

I still find QT7 Pro the quickest and easiest  method of changing sound track formats  in QuickTime movies.

You can add and delete sound tracks of any format that QuickTime will support and export any number of single  tracks of multiple discreet channels. (Although QLab will only playback 24).

It will also easily convert 4 stereo tracks in a movie to 8 discrete channels in a single track.

This sounds great!  I'm used to adding and extracting tracks in QT7, but how do I convert 4 tracks of stereo audio into one track of 8 channels within QT7?

You just export setting up the sound export like this

If you are worried you might get another pass of video encoding then you can just export the sound then delete the 4 original sound tracks in your original file and add the 8 ch discrete.
