Hey all,

I'm using a Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital for the first time and having
some trouble. I'm using the VGA input, with DVI to VGA adapters going
out, Macbook Pro, OS 10.8. When I open PowerDesk, the majority of my
options are greyed out. It also tells me that I'm using an analog
DualHead2Go, which is certainly not the case. Is there something
obvious I'm missing here? I can't find any help on Matrox's
end.

By using the VGA input on the TH2G, you are effectively using an analogue version of the DH2G, because you’re feeding it an analogue signal.

You’ll need to connect to the TH2G with a dual link DVI cable in order to tap its full potential.

Ah, thanks Sam. Would I then not be able to use the VGA outputs on the TH2G(with adapters)? Would I be required to use DVI?

That's not correct :) - I've used a triplehead2go with a VGA input to go to 3 projectors.

Something else is going on - my first thing to try would be to replace the cables and check that the software is on the latest version.

If that doesn't work, you best bet would be to contact Matrox support.

Thanks

You quite right; allow me to correct myself:

If you connect with a VGA cable, then you are necessarily making an analogue connection. The maximum resolution that the TH2G handles over VGA is 4080x768 using three outputs or 3840x1080 using two.

So if your downstream displays are configured to expect a resolution higher than 1360x768, that could be throwing a wrench in the works.

The earlier question you asked about dual link DVI suggests to me that you might have misunderstood what I mean. Do a little Googling about the different kinds of DVI connections and you’ll see what I mean.

Thanks, both of you!

Turns out you're both right on all counts.
1- I could have more resolution options with DVI.
2- I didn't understand what you meant by Dual Link, but now I do.
3- I could, in fact, get the three outputs I'm looking for out of VGA, BUT
4- There's a problem with the box I have and it's not communicating with PowerDesk correctly. Fortunately, a friend of mine has one I can swap for.

I really appreciate the feedback; I often find that having problems like this leaves me way more educated than I would be if, you know, things just worked smoothly the way I expected them to.

If its brand new, the firmware might need to be updated. Older firmware (which it ships with) doesn't talk nicely via thunderbolt.

I think the real culprit here is probably the eBay source. I updated the firmware, PowerDesk, all that. It's just convinced that it's an analog DH2G. Thankfully for me, I'm just borrowing it from the theatre I work for, and they don't mind since they're updating all of their gear anyway and had never successfully used it in the first place. Ah, well.
